This world is colored by diverse species. Some of them persist but others distinct. It is natural and sexual selections that result in incredible difference. Both are leading to a process of evolution while there still exist differences between two selections. “In mammalian males, sexual selection can have a great effect on behavior and morphology than other forms of natural selection because male reproductive success usually varies much more than female reproductive success” says in Boyd and Silk’s book (2015, p.158).
Charles Darwin’s theory has played an important role in both natural selection and sexual selection. Body and Silk (2015, p.5-6) mentioned: “Darwin’s theory of adaptation follows from three …show more content…
Natural selection seems to occur in all species, and heritable traits including genetic traits and cultural traits are key in this long-term evolution. Generic traits are physically transmitted to offspring. For example, fish’s eyes are different from humans’ in order to fit underwater environment. Cultural traits could be knowledge and skills. For instance, humans teach languages to their children to be able to communicate. The article by Raymond Hames (2015) explains that human behaviors are diverse in order to maximize individual’s fitness through either culturally or genetically transmitted across generations in different environment. In brief, both genetic traits and cultural traits develop a positive effect on …show more content…
Primate females usually spend lots of time on investing in their young, but primate males are mainly in response to costs of reproduction rather than parental investment. For example, female baboons provide a direct care to their young (Boyd & Silk, 2015, p. 147). The reason that primate females and males emphasize differently is because of concealed ovulation. It is difficult to make a mate consciously perceive if females are near ovulation and ready for pregnancy, and hence Diamond (1997, p. 63-88) produces two theories: “Daddy-at-home” and “Many-fathers”. The origin of two theories is to make sex efficient. In other words, the dominant males have to ensure the child is his in order to offer a parental investment. It also can be observed that this division of labor can create a higher chance and a better environment to continue the species with completing the reproduction and transmitting heritable
