evil has been around in all cultures for as long as anyone can remember. In early Native American culture they did not use the words such as right and wrong or good and evil. Instead, Native Americans used left and right to explain why certain things are the way that they are and also why people act a certain way. In the story, “The World on a Turtle’s Back”, two twins, the right-handed twin and the left-handed twin, are competing. The right-handed twin is the good in the story and the left-handed twin is the evil. The right-handed twin creates ‘good’ animals such as the deer, ground squirrel, and porcupine. The left-handed twin creates the ‘evil’ or ‘bad’ animals such as the mountain lion, weasel, and bear. The left-handed twin creates the animals that would hurt and kill the animals that the right-handed twin created. This is one of many Native American stories that deal with the concept of good vs. evil.
In our society today, good vs. evil is seen everywhere. Children’s fairy tales are generally centered around the good fighting against the evil. In books, movies, and plots of almost everything, the good vs. evil concept falls into place. It is the one thing that seems to have never failed to capture the attention of any person. The daily news often shows what ‘bad’ act or acts happened that day and what are the ‘good’ people are doing about it.
