Native American Culture And Media Essay

Media for most is a way of self expression. A way of showing our changing America and what the world looks like today. Sadly, Hollywood is not doing a very good job as showing what America truly looks like. Minority groups such as African Americans, Native Americans, Asians, and Hispanics are not represented in media and if they are shown, are portrayed in a negative way. Researchers of the University of Southern California conducted an experiment stating that of the top 100 films in 2014 73.1% of the actors and actresses were white. Out of the 100 films surveyed, only 17 of them had non white leads or co leads. Minority groups such as African Americans, Native Americans, Asians, and Hispanics are not represented in media and if they are shown, are portrayed in a negative way.
AFRICAN AMERICANS
Native American roles are not given in media and if they are, all of the roles are stereotypical. Native Americans are associated with poverty, addiction, and a lack of formal education. The American Census Bureau reports that 2.9 million people in the United States are Native American; However, the percentage of Native Americans in media ranges for 0 to 0.4 percent. Native American's have been here in America longer than anyone else. Wouldn't it make sense that they are shown in T.V and media as much as everyone else? Although Latinos make up a good portion of American people, they are not shown in media. Latinos are about 18 percent of the population. Out of 11,000 speaking characters in film surveyed, only 5.8 percent of them are Latino. The Comprehensive Annenberg Report on Diversity found that Latinos are among the least represented roles on film and Television. When Latinos are shown in media they are very often associated with a crime. From 2012 to 2013 17.7 percent of Latino film characters and 24.2 percent of Latino T.V characters were linked to a crime. PARENTHETICAL DOCUMENTATION. Latinos are a huge part of our society and Hollywood isn’t showing what they have done to help us and why they are an essential part of our changing America. Asians are also very under represented in media, and aren’t even given roles that were obviously written for people of the Asian race in mind. One example of this is in the movie depiction of classic book Breakfast at Tiffany’s. In the movie depiction Asian character I.Y. Yunioshi is played by white

Media is not. America is a place for opportunities, dreams, and greatness. Hard working people come to America everyday for opportunities and some have been living here their whole lives. What's wrong, is that people who came here for these opportunities and for this American dream are not getting the same opportunities as everyone else because of the color of their skin or their race. African Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans, and Latinos do not get the same opportunities white people do in America, especially when it comes to media. People of color have been discriminated against enough in every aspect. Media should be the place where everyone can see someone who looks like them, and enjoy themselves, but sadly this is not the case. Hollywood needs to take a step back and see people for the talent they have and who they are, not just for their skin

Diversity in the media doesn’t simply just mean for people of color, it also means for any underrepresented group of people in America. With this decrease in negativity, it starts to enable a welcoming environment for people to feel comfortable in; thus, creating a more productive country and lifestyles for everyone. Once people start to become aware of the diversity in media, talking about certain issues that affect people of color and other underrepresented groups become much easier. This is not to stay that it’ll be a piece of cake, but it creates dialogue and talking things out sets a better tone for change. In an article posted on the Guardian, author Christopher Hodgson was talking about the benefits that come with having a diverse team to work with, “When people see themselves in a cohort or a group they are more likely to apply for the job or contribute to a project or a story.…

For instance common representations of the Afro Caribbean community in England and the African American community in America is that as a community they keep themselves to themselves and that there is a ‘us and them’ atmosphere when it comes to people of colour and Caucasians. Although there are acceptations to these statistics when it comes to race and the characters a certain race portrays, it is a frightening image. For instance in the top 500 grossing films in the years 2007-2012, 75.8% of speaking characters were portrayed by white actors. Whereas only 12.4% of them were portrayed by black actors. In the same study…

Hollywood misrepresents Asians by placing racially stereotyped characters and place a Non-Asian actor to fill in Asian roles in films, which creates false depictions of Asians and Asian cultures. In the film industry, Casting Directors hire popular Non-Asian actors than Asian actors just solely based off of popularity. The community of Asians face hardship because of racial stereotype being depicted in the wide-screen. Without an abundance of Asians in the Media, Asians can not be represented properly because of the lack of Asians casted in Hollywood films and TV shows. Asian Actors can not receive roles because of producers casting Non-Asians actors, which leads to “Yellow Face”.…
