Who exactly was Nathaniel Hawthorne? Nathaniel Hathorne was born on July 4th, of 1804. He was son to Captain Nathaniel Hathorne and his wife Elizabeth Clarke Manning Hathorne. Captain Hathorne died in 1808 at sea of yellow fever, leaving Elizabeth with no financial support to raise her three children Nathaniel, Elizabeth and Louisa. They were forced to move in with Elizabeth's brothers in Salem. This is often thought to be where his introverted personality started. While here, Nathaniel had a leg injury that left him immobile for a period of time and he developed a taste for reading and writing. He was taught by Joseph E. Worcester and wasn't fond of schooling. He then returned to live with his mother and sister for the next 12 years. When he started writing, he added the w to his name to distance himself from his Salem ancestors. He started keeping notebooks and began perfecting his writing craft. He published his first novel in 1828, Fanshaw: A Tale. This novel was short and poorly written. He was dissatisfied with the novel and in attempt to stop anyone from reading it, he tried to buy all the copies. For the next 25 years, he did not publish any Novels, but continued writing short stories. In 1837, he published a collection of his short stories called Twice-Told Tales. He received praise about this publication from people such as Edgar Allan Poe. 1n 1838 he met his future wife Sophia Amelia Peabody, and they were engaged by the next year.They moved to Concord, Massachusetts and rented Old Manse, owned by Ralph Waldo Emerson. Nathaniel became friends with Mr.Emerson and the naturalist Henry David Thoreau. They were both transcendentalist thinkers and they helped influence Hawthorne's thinking about the importance of intuition rather than intellect. On July 9th, 1842 Nathaniel and Sophia were married.
