Nasogastric Tube Reflection

Improved Essays
This week in clinical, I was assigned a patient with a nasogastric tube. A NG tube is very painful for the patient if it is slightly moved, so I was a little nervous taking care of this patient. I walked into to the room and met with the patient and his wife. I began to ask him questions about his past medical history, his medications, and current state of being. I then took vital signs. After finishing vital signs, I realized that his pulse was 54 bmp, which is very low. So, I discussed this with the nurse and she told me that is normal pulse for this patient. I then did am care on the patient. I had to be very careful because of his NG tube, so changing the gown was the most difficult part of the procedure. The patient then stated that he wanted to go and sit in the chair. …show more content…
Then we helped the patient slowly transfer from the bed to the chair. I frequently asked the patient if he feels any pain or dizziness. When talking with the PCT, I learned that they had to call the rapid response team yesterday, when the patient got up to walk. When the patient stated that he wanted to walk, I became very tense and anxious. With the help of my nursing instructor, we got the patient up and he walked to the end of the hallway and back without any complaints of pain or dizziness. I also did a head to toe assessment on the patient with the nursing instructor because I want to be more confident in my abilities in assessing

I also had the opportunity to work with an anesthesiologist alone; this was not planned, however. The nurse anesthetist was running late and the anesthesiologist could not delay bringing the patient back since the patient was not only a possible difficult intubation, but because she also needed an arterial line. Since the anesthesiologist had worked with me previously she asked me to intubate the patient with a glidescope while she began preparing the arterial line. I was able to successful intubate the patient with the glidescope, although I had a grade 2b view (only arytenoids and epiglottis were viewed). I was also asked to insert a second IV because the one the patient originally had was positional.…

I also learned how to combine and practice my assessments that I learned up to week 8. I was able to hear crackling sounds in the lungs of a resident who has COPD. Moreover, my biggest challenge this week was understanding everything that I should assess by observing the resident’s diagnoses. I knew some signs and symptoms of some diseases but I did not have access to a computer to look it up. I would ask some of the LPN’s, but they seemed a bit annoyed to answer some of my questions.…

As a recovery nurse, in a post anaesthesia care unit, I cared for patients, emerging out of general anaesthesia. Assessing for any potential complications with the patient’s airway, breathing, circulation, disability and exposure, as per the hospital’s recovery room protocol. This systematic approach, alerted me when the patient experienced any complications. For example, one patient’s vital signs were stable for the first two sets of observations. As per the hospital policy, I then removed the patient’s mask giving 2% oxygen and monitored if the patient could maintain 100% oxygen saturation, on room air.…
