The white American man is free. He has the ability to go anywhere he wants, and to get there any way he chooses. There are no limits to the distance that he can travel. He is free to show off his white American skin, and to sunbathe like he owns the world. However, the black American slave is limited by boundaries. His journey reaches as far as his slave owner will allow. He doesn't have physical control over his body, and cannot fulfill his desires to travel. Although his freedom has been taken away, he still has the capability to use his voice. He doesn't give up. The black slave is fearful of self expression. He lives in constant consternation, but he is still confident to gain freedom. God hears his voice when he sings like a bird. The

Slavery justifies saying such as this one, where a slave does not cost anything and it makes it very difficult for slaves to find who they are and form an identity. At this point they are part of a body of black bodies with no voice and no escape. In addition, by taking away their humanness, the males slaves are also being stripped of their manhood which is a part of the male identity. Males are supposed to be strong and protect the family, but how can they do that if they are not even considered to be a person. Being freed from slavery was a wish come true for the blacks, but this wish was not fulfilled by the Americans. From not being allowed to vote in many states and having restrictions on voting, to being banned from integrating with the whites, and to give up on one’s education, blacks in the North were not free as they should have been. They were ripped away from several basic rights, such as acquiring a job or even to integrating with a white person. By stating that these blacks were “free” just sugarcoated the fact that they were simply being more and more discriminated against by society. Even though blacks were free men just like the white men, they did not get the same rights as they deserved.…

In September 2017, Walter Johnson wrote an article in the Boston Review titled “No Rights Which is White Man is Bound to Respect,” a title after a claim from Chief Justice Roger Taney’s ruling in the case of Scott V. Sanford in 1857, highlighting the systemic racism that plagued America during this time, and how Chief Justice Taney’s words have only become more true with time. Detailing the unjust police state that was prominent in Missouri, Johnson emphasizes the racism and brutality the government was enabling over a hundred years ago, and how it is still unjustly enabled today in twenty first century societies. Johnson effectively shines a light on America’s corrupt government, and its unfair, racially criminalizing justice system by using…

I already used this quote but the last part I think is important, “and though he is nominally free he is actually a slave.” When I read this, I was staggered because of how much truth there was to it. African Americans were legally considered free but were not, really. They did not have the rights every other white person had and were treated as if they were criminals.…

People are no longer slaves to others, but they are slaves to themselves. President Abraham Lincoln concluded that, “And by virtue of the power and for the purpose aforesaid, I do order and declare that all persons held as slaves within said designated states and parts of states are, and henceforward shall be, free”. People are free from the law, but they are not free from the judgement of others. When a black man walks into a restaurant, he is judged for his color (Du Bois). Nobody is meant to be born to be a slave. That with hard work and dedication, slavery can come to its end. The story is about a slave that goes by the name of Fredrick Douglass who fought for his freedom and the freedom of all blacks. “The most interesting feature of my history here was my learning to read and write, under somewhat marked disadvantages” (Douglass 339). Not many people had the advantage to learn how to read or write but some who did have it took advantage of it, of course, in a good way.…
