The American dream
We travelled on a wagon and boarded a ship to America in England. I am here with my grandmother, my mom, my dad and my two younger brothers. We wanted to come to the USA because we were promised a better life in the USA and my grandparents on my mother’s side lives there. They promised us freedom, happiness and wealth in the USA.
My family and I are only allowed a small suitcase, so we had to leave many of our favorite things behind. The ship is really overcrowded and it smells. We sometimes have to go out on deck, even though it is freezing outside, just to get some fresh air. It is hard being cramped in the hull of a ship for weeks when it is dark, crowded and smelly. Anything is better than this, I hope we arrive in New

Money weren’t any problem either. My grandfather used to have a lot of money. When he died, my dad inherited about 35 per cent of his money and my grandmother got the rest, about 65 per cent.
When we were done with everything on Ellis Island, we finally got on a boat that took us to a train station in New York. Then we got on a train to go to my grandparents’ house. They lived in Florida.
I was really looking forward to get to their house because I had heard that it was hot all year round. My friends in Norway told me that the winter, was pretty much the same as a Norwegian summer, but that it could be even warmer.
It was currently winter in the USA and it was pretty cold in New York, but hotter than in Norway. It was a little bit cold on the train too, but I had warmer clothes in my suitcase. I was really tired and fell asleep on the train even though it was only afternoon when we got on the train. I did not get a lot of sleep on the ship from England because it was so crowded and it was night in Norway, so it was not weird that I was really

On our way to their house, they told my family about how lucky we were. They had also arrived at Ellis Island, but that was a couple of years ago. Since then, the building on Ellis Island had burned down and they had expanded the Island with material from a subway station that they were building on Manhattan, and built a new, bigger and fireproof building with for example 600 beds.
A few years later
We have been living in Florida for a few years now. My mom and dad have gotten jobs, my brothers and I have made new friends and started a new school, my grandmother does still live with us, but we have moved out of my grandparents’ house, to a bigger and newer house, ten minutes from my grandparents. I really like it here and I definitely think that I have gotten a better life here than in Norway. I truly miss my friends, but I am super happy that we moved.

When I was nineteen years old life was pretty hard in Ireland. It was not like you think it is today where many people go for vacation to rest and see the beautiful land. There was an law passed long before I was born that took many rights from our Irish people like voting, being able to defend ourselves with weapons, receiving an education, and enrolling in colleges, gaining employment. Because of the many rights that were taken away there was forced military service among our men leaving young mothers without fathers for their children, famine which is not enough food for everyone and many people died, too many people where in the country and many of them without jobs, and religious persecution which means we were not allowed to practice our beliefs without consequences.…

After leaving their home in Nigeria, my parents had to jump from home to home constantly moving me and my family until they could learn how to properly settle in America. Being an immigrant from a country experiencing issues like health outbreaks, an unjust government, and a disastrous economy has had a negative impact on my education here in the United states. I came from Ethiopia to Minnesota when I was seven years old and at the time mass shootings operated by the government were a norm in Ethiopia. I remember walking to school with my sister and hearing gunshots in the distance followed by adults dragging us into their houses for protection. I also remember watching the news and seeing protesters getting beat with batons by soldiers. Life was extremely difficult for both my parents and I. Now that I am in America, I am thankful everyday that my sister, parents and I escaped the horrid reality of living in Ethiopia.…
