Narrative Essay On Sororities

Ever since I saw the movie Legally Blonde when I was five years old, I dreamed of joining a sorority. I loved the idea of having sisters who would always have my back. Thirteen years later, I was a little skeptical of the whole process and I was not the only one either. My family and friends disapproved of sororities. They saw it as “just buying friends.” Some even thought they were “degrading to women.” However, I decided to ignore their criticism and live my five year old dream. I did not want any regrets about not rushing my freshman year of college. Aside from what I have seen in movies, I knew nothing about sororities or the recruitment process. I was not a “legacy” which is what they called the girls who had moms or sisters in a sorority. This was all new to me. The first two days of rush were meet and greets at the Greenville Convention Center. Each sorority had their own room, packed with about 150 people. As one can imagine, the rooms were clamorous with conversation. I had to meet with five sororities the first day and another five the second day, then eliminate two. Each meeting was only twenty minutes. The goal was to have a “real” conversation to eliminate sororities based off. How was I supposed to eliminate a group of 150 plus girls based on a twenty minute conversation I had with just one or two of …show more content…
Another girl going through recruitment, Tori, and I were grouped with an Alpha Phi member, Megan. We started talking about where we were from when Tori and Megan realized they were both from the same part of New Jersey. After that I barely got a word in and they talked on and on for the entire twenty minutes. It went so horribly that I knew I was going to eliminate Alpha Phi tomorrow. The rest of the day went better. All the great conversations I had at the other four sororities surprised me because I was not expecting to like so many of them. This all just reassured my decision to eliminate Alpha

“It’s not what it looks like”, this is what the majority of members of a sorority or fraternity would respond after being asked about Greek life. Why is that they feel like they have to say that? One word: Marketing. The way sororities and fraternities are portrayed to the public gives off a bad image and reputation about the members and their community. Any person who has not been part of Greek life and does not have any information about this community and its activities they would think sororities and fraternities are just a big house full of college people just having fun, drinking, and sleeping around.…

According to “Here’s Looking at You: Self-Objection, Body Image Disturbance, and Sorority Rush” author Ashley Marie Rolnik, Renee Englen-Maddox & Steven A. Miller, “sorority members have been described as having a preoccupation with body image appearance and may be more at risk for eating disorders/eating disordered behavior than non-members” (Maddox, Miller & Rolnik 8). The form of initiation of rush week in order to be accepted among the group is a barbarous way and should be looked over and change in way that will boost a student’s confidence instead of having them second guess of who they…

Greek life on campus is an aspect of upper education that is publicized often, many proclaiming the social and educational benefits of living with your peers, but has a significant amount of negative stigma attached to it. Although the tales told of fraternities and sororities are sometimes exaggerated, there are many more cases where Greek life organizations have garnered copious amounts of attention for controversial behavior. In Fraternity and Sorority Alcohol Use: Does Race Matter?, Michael Capece, David Schantz, and Rebecca Wakeman expound upon one of these behaviors, specifically detailing the general perception of alcohol consumption within fraternities and sororities and across two different races, from the point of view of research.…
