Narrative Essay On My Job Shadow

Improved Essays
My job shadow was on November 15 from 10:30 am-3:00pm in Sioux Falls at the Sanford Parry Center. I had the pleasure of shadowing two people: Brian Wallenburg, a former paramedic, and Devon Hamlyn, a current paramedic. They shared with me what it takes to be in the emergency medical field and what I can do to become qualified for the position if I decide later that that is what I want to do. The morning started off somewhat stressful; GoogleMaps had me flustered and I was worried I wouldn't find the right parking ramp. I had allotted the perfect amount of time for me to arrive with five minutes before the shadow as I didn’t want to be waiting around awkwardly. Turns out I should have left the school earlier because by 10:20 the parking ramps are full. I had to wind through each level all the way to the top of the ramp, jog across the parking lot, take the creaky elevator down to the …show more content…
Being a paramedic seems like a stressful occupation, but if you can sprinkle in “me-time” Hamlyn says its the best job out there. On the car ride over to the Paramedics Plus hub Hamlyn discussed major skills needed for the job, the dangers of being an EMT or paramedic, and what she views as the best part of her job. She told me in school it is important to take math and sciences, specifically algebra and anatomy. To be in an emergency service career you have to have exceptional physical and mental health. There is a lot of heavy-lifting involved so Hamlyn said getting a gym membership or working out with coworkers is a great way to build muscle up for the heavier patients and equipment. She admitted the job can be dangerous at times; the vehicles travel at high speeds and sometimes she has to put herself at risk to get her patient to safety. However, when the critical patient is safe and lives because of her she knows it is all worth it. The best part of her job, Hamlyn said, is knowing she’s truly made a

As I mentioned in the previous assignment, I want to increase my baseline 500 steps each week so that by the end of the semester I am recording 10,000 steps which is in the active range. I will continue walking around the property at work and stepping in place whenever I possibly can. I will stick to walking to the mailbox which is two blocks from home as opposed to driving up to it on my way home. If I have days where I am tired I will just give myself another pep talk. I have a pretty good support system thus far so I will lean on them if pushing myself on my own does not cut it.…

Clarence, I agree with you completely that older generations follow the motto “a hard day’s work for an honest day’s pay”. I work with a few older employees and they work 5x harder than some of the younger employees I work with. I also received a 35 on my EI test which I was not surprised of either. I have a very high work ethic and have very little time for play in my job. I do need to learn to put myself in others shoes; sometimes this is very hard for me to do.…

My experiences, academic background and personality are three key aspects of my life that make the medical field a preference and a particularly suitable field for me. My interest in medicine was first sparked when I volunteered at CentraState Medical Center working with geriatric patients. To further explore this interest, I joined the First Aid Squad in my town. Riding on ambulances and volunteering at the squad provided much-needed insight into the field and taught me valuable skills, such as patient care and effective communication. After completing a four-month intensive EMT course and state exam, I can proudly say that I am now a New Jersey certified EMT.…

I have always been interested in learning and using new ideas. Throughout my life, I have invariably drawn from my life experiences, newly learned ideas and my continuing education to help problem-solve sensibly and realistically allowing me to move forward or help others reach their goals. Although I have no formal teaching experience, in my past work and involvement in organized sports, I have repeatedly used the Progressive philosophy. When dealing with 13 & 14 year olds many situations arise such as bullying, personality clashes or simply not understanding a drill or play. I deal with these situations by asking questions to stimulate a discussion, allowing them to draw on past experiences; positive or negative, consequently allowing them to come up with a solution or grasp the knowledge they are seeking.…

It’s not fun to have to administer emergency medicine. The only other experience comparable to this is what EMT does. We are one 110-hour class away from being an EMT. Being an athletic trainer may be fun at times and you get to travel to many sporting events, which in my opinion beats sitting in a desk all day. The down side to this is you get paid below average for at which other bachelor degrees start.…

My response to this selection is that Hornak made right decision, even though it took her long time to realize, but it would be hard for me If I were to change my career. It would be hard for me because I know I spent a lot time to study and it costs me a lot too. But I personally believe that we all need money, but I would also want to pick the major that I would enjoy in and which would make me proud. For instance, I like to help others…

This summer I completed my field experience by shadowing a physician assistant named Adam Strantz. He works in a primary care office in Fremont, Michigan. The office, Spectrum Health Medical Group, was fairly small and included only two PAs and one physician. Before starting my shadowing, I set a few goals for myself to learn during my time there. The Worst Job Ever I wake up early to a loud alarm clock telling me it's time to start another day. I groan, roll over, and try to get another ten minutes rest in. I proceed to make my coffee, and then wishfully glance at the calendar to see if its any closer to Friday. All this stalling and frustration is due to the fact I despise my job. Everyone worked together and treated each other like a family so that helped me to be comfortable working with them. The workplace was always very clean, which also created a nice environment around me to focus on my work.
