“First place for the free throw hoop shoot for ages 8-9 is...Amaya Hamilton!” Hearing the president of the Elks hoop shoot call my name for first place in the regionals was very surprising. This means that I am going to state for the free throw shooting competition in Midland, Michigan. Before making it to the regionals, I got first place at districts. What made the experience even better is that my brother, Elijah, made it to state along with me for his age group.
After a long car ride to Midland, we finally arrived to the Best Western Center where all of the competitors will meet to have dinner. When we walked in, one of the workers kindly greeted us and gave Elijah and I a green t-shirt and a duffle bag that read ‘Hoop Shoot State Finals 2009’ with a big orange basketball in the middle. We then walked inside a huge noisy ballroom that smelled like burnt food. It contained about 30 tables and chairs filled with adults and children. All of the competitors rode a bus to Midland High School. When we walked in we dropped our stuff off in a classroom, and went into the gym and started warming up. The gym was separated in half at the half-court line. On the left side were the boys and the right side were the girls. The 8-9 year olds are shooting first. There were six girls I was competing against. I was the fifth one to shoot. When the first girl started shooting nerves shot through me. The first girl made 18/25. The second girl made 17/25. The third and fourth each made 10/25. I made 14/25. The last girl made 12/25. That put me in third place. I got a trophy that said Elks Hoop Shoot Third Place and a medal that said state champion with a elk in the center.The trophy was as cold as ice when I grabbed it from the guy who was handing them
