“The Great Commandment”
On October 12, 2014, I attended the morning service at Beulah Baptist Church in Statesville, North Carolina. The service normally starts around 10:30 a.m. and ends a little after twelve o’clock. On that particular day, the service was divided into three parts: a baptism, the praise and worship service and finally the sermon. Dr. Coite Sherrill conducted the worship service and my pastor, Dr. Allen Roberts, delivered the sermon. Magic was not involved in any aspect of the service. In addition, I attended Sunday school that morning before the morning service. The church also conducts an evening service on Sundays at 6:30 pm, as well as a mid-week service on Wednesdays at 7:00 pm.

Beulah Baptist Church is a monotheistic church for the following reason: Pastor Dr. Allen Roberts opened the service by praying to Jesus as well as asking The Lord’s blessing upon the Church in addition to asking The Lord to speak through him during the sermon. The Baptist church is part of the Protestant religion and believes in the holy trinity.

The holy is not displayed in art in any space of the church building; however, symbols are present as soon as you enter into the building. The windows are stained glass depicting doves and praying hands. A white cross with a purple sage hung across it is displayed in front of the church building. The various symbols are representational interpretations because they point to holy things. There is also scripture engraved above the main double doors as you enter into the sanctuary. The service that day began with a young man named Michael Johnson being baptized by Dr. Roberts. This baptismal ceremony symbolizes a sacred right. The baptism is representational because the young man has committed his life to the Lord by decision to be made new. The baptism is also presentational because the baptism washes away his

Brilliantly coloured stain glass windows adorn cathedrals such as Chartes which is a treasure house of stain-glass such as the Virgin and Child, The Window of Jesse and The Last Supper. The importance of light in Gothic cathedrals is reflective of Middle Age ideology that light was the purest form and often associated with Christ. The divine reality of God that light ignited for the people of the Middle Ages is solidified through the vertical architecture which not only draws the viewer’s eye upwards, but it draws the eye upwards towards the light and therefore towards…

Preacher Jonathan Edwards was able to give a sermon that greatly impacted others. Despite his monotonous voice and actions, he was able to strike fear into the hearts of many Puritans, solely through his diction and elaborate use of imagery. The figurative language present throughout his speech could have been represented in several ways, including an image based on his descriptions of the human relationship with God. There were many sketches that illustrated the speech by Jonathan Edwards very well; however, one sketch in particular accurately brought the speech to life.…

Since these stained glass windows were usually high up in the church, people could not see what the art was portraying. The people believed it was a portrayal of Christ’s Crucifixion because that is what they were told. This shows in which you believe in something, even though you are not able to see it. I believe the reason that this piece was made was due to the advances in architecture at the later end of the twelfth century. They were able to produce taller and larger buildings out of stone and wanted the new cathedrals to have a visual representation of Christ.…

On August 23, 2015 I attend a local Maysville church not far from where I live to complete the church visitation assignment. I choose to attend Grants Creek Missionary Baptist Church, because it is located in a quaint building out in the country and not to mention a different denomination than myself. This church is of a Baptist denomination, which is unique because it is the denomination of Campbell University. I thought this project would be a great opportunity for me to become more diverse in my faith and discover more about the Baptist culture. It all started on the Wednesday prior to the twenty-third when on my way home I seen cars at the church, so I decided to stop in and meet the pastor and let him know that my intention was…

When you walk into a church you may realize that there are serval paintings, but what you may have not noticed is their significance. If you look at each painting closely you may notice that they tell a story. The Nativity with the Prophets Isaiah and Ezekiel is a piece of art history which uses iconography and religion to create a narrative. The Nativity is not only a piece of art, but it also is an altarpiece. Since an altar is where offerings for a church are held, the images that appeared on the altarpiece carry the most significance.…

So I did a little research on their website and the only thing I could find that the church always does is their Sunday service. At the beginning of their Sunday service they read the creed of the church, which states that man is basically good. After that they have the sermon, this part of the service is usually about something going on in the world that involves their beliefs. After that they have the L. Ron Hubbard lecture, which tells them about his life, and they read parts of Dianetics, which is also like their holy scripture. Then there is “group auditing,” which is what I was talking about when you started reading.…
