The Engagement
I open my eyes; the sun is peeking through the closed blinds. I am eager to get out of bed and start my day, longing for a gorgeous sunny and warm day with Ethan. Thump thump thump, I trudge down the stairs, leaving Remi, our dog, and Ethan, my boyfriend still in bed.
“Ahh!” I shriek.
On the bar sit daises, colorful and vibrant with a note. “Take me to the place we ate breakfast many times before school. Hint hint cinnamon buns.” I race back up the stairs, barely able to see where I am going, the tears welling up in my eyes. Hands trembling and mind racing, I try to figure out something special to wear.
A million questions race through my head: Is today the day he asks me to marry him? Where are we going after breakfast? Should I bring sneakers? I decide on black ruffled shorts and a maroon short sleeve shirt so I am comfortable and cute and bring

Twisting and turning, I free the wire.
The note says; “Big flames, friends, tailgates and lots of long starry nights. Hint hint good times.” I giggle to myself knowing exactly where we are heading next.
“Come on! Let’s keep walking” Ethan exclaims.
Huffing and puffing, up the steep hill, we finally make it back to the top. I mosey over to my next clue by the fire pit. This clue states; “Take me to where we can paddle, chat and splash. Hint hint don’t forget your life jacket.”
“Are we going kayaking today too?” I screech with excitement.
“That’s something we love to do together Ethan said, but you’ll have to wait and see when we get there.”
The Dodge pulls in right where I thought we were heading, the Long Arm Dam. I splash around in the green kayak and Ethan prefers to paddle around with the yellow kayak. The sun kisses my skin out on the water keeping me warm like a toasted marshmallow. Our leisurely paddling leads us just far enough out that we can hear the fish swishing below. The warm water feels like an ice-cold drink as it drips on my warm

“Here we are,” I thought to myself as my parents and I pulled up to a big oak tree in our old, puke colored Subaru. The massive tree overlooked the Boston Harbor and the enormous cruise boats on it. Under the oak stood an assortment of kids and instructors from all over the world. No a one of them knowing what they were about to get their self into.…

Crashing underwater in the North Georgia mountains, I wondered how I ended up here, upside down in the freezing cold water of the Cartecay river. My friend Jackson is a thrill-seeking kayaker, the total opposite of me. He’s outgoing and loves adventure, while I’m a bit introverted and cautious. Last winter Jackson convinced me to go kayaking, assuring me the river was easy to navigate and harmless.…

Today is going to be just like any other day, I sketched in my morning journal. The morning Baltimore sun shone past the skyscrapers of downtown, and light protruded through the silk blinds that covered half of the picture window in my room. I rose up from my queen bed. The sheets had become untucked and the comforter lay halfway off the edge. My back rested against the mahogany headboard with my head fitting perfectly between two of the wooden posts.…
