When it was time for a major leadership turnover we were dealt an unfortunate hand and provided with a similar leader. Our unit was provided with an image focused base commander, a squadron commander ready to retire and a director of operations who was given control and wanted it his way. Due to cut requirements passed down from Congress, airmen have developed a lot of negative emotions. They watched for multiple years as their peers were either voluntary or involuntary separated or retired by leadership they had not even met. When I entered the Air Force I watched the last two years unfold and experienced first hand the effects that remained with the cuts.
Currently, I work for the Air Force as part of an operations group that provides missile warning to end-users around the world. Working with a wide range of people I have seen more and more airmen experiencing job dissatisfaction. Job dissatisfaction is a negative feeling associated with someone’s current career (Robbins & Judge, 2009). This can be caused by mundane, routine work; negative associations with their job, such as being punished more than being praised; or by a problem with the person’s attitude towards themselves (Saari & Judge, 2004).
