This Naqqali of Bijan and Manijeh was performed by Valiollah Torabi on an arena stage studio theater. The stage in this kind of theater is completely surrounded by the audience. It features a close performer/audience connection which underlines the performer and audience’s sense of community. The light of the stage is set and projected evenly to the same effect. As Naqqali performances would often take place in coffee houses the decor and props are chosen in a way to represent a traditional coffee house. For instance, the walls around the stage are decorated with paintings of epic scenes from Shahnameh. Other details of stage decoration such as using tea pots, sugar bowls, tea cups and saucers along with the paintings are served to create the …show more content…
Using khaki brown for the stage background gives the designer the advantage of a neutral color. The freedom to choose any color for other details of the stage is shown in bright blue and red candle holders, different shades of red on sugar bowls, tea pots, Pelargonium flowers and Torabi’s clothing as well. He is dressed in a dark green shirt over which he wore a Persian indigo vest, black pants, and shoes. On the vest’s front the poem “Thy source of might Is knowledge: thus old hearts grow young again” is embroidered with gold; the back is decorated with two swords that resemble Imam Ali’s double bladed sword. Having a Persian poem on front and a religious symbol of justice on back of the vest is significant. It denotes the two sides of the Iranian culture. The front poem is a metaphor for Iranian ancient ethos; that is known for its rich literature part of which is Ferdowsi’s poetry. The religious symbol on the back of the vest shows the other side of Iranian ethos which is their religion and call for justice, symbolized by Imam Ali’s sword. These two sides of the vest and their meaning imply that the Iranian culture is comprised of ancient ethos as well as religion and that these two sides support one another since one is incomplete without the other. Valiollah Torabi, having a retentive memory, knows Ferdowsi’s poems by heart, therefore; he does not use scrolls or Tumar. However, he makes use of his cane or Metraq. Graffiti for Social Change The general argument made by the author in the work, "Afghani Artist puts Beautiful Images on Kabul’s Ugly Walls of War,”is that art can help change people's minds about violence and corruption. More specifically, the author argues that Kabir Mokamel and the group known as the Art Lords are using the large concrete blast walls that surround the homes of government officials and other upper class people as a canvas for paintings that speak out against corruption and violence. The author quotes Mokamel as saying, "the minute you put the stroke of a brush on a wall, that much of the wall has disappeared" (2). Throughout Marjane Satrapi graphic novel, Persepolis, Satrapi demonstrates a variety of artistry in order to bring out emotion and emphasis in the plot. Frames, the outline of a panel, and the images inside them, show these emotions through size and detail of the panel. Similar to film, graphic novels can emphasize what the author wants the formalizer, the reader of a graphic novel, to focus on through the viewpoint of the panel. The details also come into play with the distance from the focus point the panel takes place in. As the story of Persepolis progresses, Satrapi’s artistic style starts to become apparent, which brings emphasis to tone, underlying stories, and narrative.…

Many cultures have a history of story-telling or folklore, and many times during special occasions, holidays, seasonal observances people performed these stories in a play for the community. It takes a special type of artistry to direct a play, organizing, and developing many parts into one smooth story, so the audience will become infused in the play. Cultures like Japan, Greek, Aboriginal Australians, and most Native American cultures all practice special ceremonies, where ancient beliefs, and legends are performed by special actors for the community. While many of those Giants of the Arts usually evolved from those early European pioneers, but I believed wealth and opportunity allowed for their notoriety, while other cultures still offered a unique style of art. Many people differ in their idea of a play or theater, because most think of Shakespeare as the typical of playwriting, but I would choose to direct a Zuni Harvest Dance, so I could bring some understanding to a different cultures art.…

Mabou Mines’ production of Dollhouse captured my attention and introduced me to a new way of thinking about creative theatre. The production showed me a portrayal of theatrical text that stretched artistic boundaries in a way to captivate audience members throughout the entire production. This production made me angry, laugh, feel disturbed, and many other emotions all under three hours. A truly incredible performance can make an audience member feel many emotions, especially emotions that they are not comfortable feeling. The main aspects of the production that drew me in and made emotions arise were in: the portrayal of Nora’s transformation, the creative use of color and sound, and the revolutionary use of size and space.…
