Catnaps of five or ten minutes don’t help much. When is it best to nap? Not when you feel the need most strongly. A nap taken before you are very tired will prevent fatigue. Sleep is necessary for physical and mental health. Whatever promotes health promotes longer life. Health statisticians say that coronary heart disease is less common in siesta countries than in Northern Europe and North America. Men who nap half an hour or more every day are 30 percent less likely to develop a cardiac condition than those who don’t nap. Naps also reduce the need for deep sleep and may make it harder for people with sleep problems to fall asleep or stay asleep at night.
Napping does have some hazards. Most people are groggy upon waking. So it’s dangerous to nap if you have to wake suddenly and immediately take control of complex machinery or technical operations. If you feel drowsy at the wheel and pull over for a nap, wait 15 minutes after waking before resuming your drive.
