In regards to the events that transpired due to the actions of the Japanese military force in 1937, there have been many accounts and retellings of those events. Throughout the decades people have used different words to describe what happened: a rape, a battle, an Invasion, or a massacre. Judging by the details of the event and the atrocities that were committed by the Japanese, the word Massacre would be the closest word to describe this tragic part of Chinese History.
The word “Massacre” is defined as deliberately and/or violently killing a large number of people. Though the numbers vary greatly throughout history , there is no doubt that at the very least, tens of thousands of people were murdered. An estimated 200,000- 300,000 thousand people have died in this tragedy according to. These weren’t just soldiers that died in the line of duty during a battle. The bodycount included mostly residents of Nanjing. These people were killed in extremely excruciating ways. For example a large part of the Nanjing incident had to do with the Japanese sexually abusing as many Chinese woman as they could find.
