Maris starts off her essay with a scene of herself embarrassingly falling onto the toilet seat and accepting her disability (259). Mairs purpose to write this essay was to inform people of her disability and the way she deals with it in her daily life. Mairs self-identifies as being a crippled and embraces all the moments that come along with the hardship of her reality. The moment she had changed was, “When I was twenty-eight I started to trip and drop things” (Mairs 261). Throughout all of this Mairs never failed to lose her humor in life.
