The assessment would then give the study a qualitative guide to the conclusion and recommendations 5.2 Discussion and Analysis The Namibian Ports have witnessed on some occasions incidents, some of which involved occupational health problems including loss of limbs as well as reported death, and some of which were caused by mishandling of Dangerous Goods (damaged containers causing spillage). But on a general note, it seems that Namport has not experience big catastrophic accidents or incidents. This seems to attest to a good safety record from Namport. It is clear that even if there are several guidelines that Namport considers, the local handling procedures and laws are largely the IMDG code as Namibia is also part of the IMO. The Namport operating procedures for the handling and storage of Dangerous Goods as well as the system procedures for the emergency preparedness and response plans are according to the IMDG code. There are strict regulations in place that are to be followed by all people working with Dangerous Goods. There is enforcement of these regulations, and supervisory of staff to make sure they follow to the regulations. This, however, does not mean that some people cannot get away with circumvention of the expected standard practice. The monitoring of all personnel all the time remains a key challenge, a challenge which increases risks when it comes to handling of Dangerous Goods. There have been various accidents at the ports of Namibia, with reports of loss of limbs and death of some workers, as well as spillages. But Namport boasts a good safety record due to the absence of catastrophic events and calamities. There have been no major recorded problems as a result of dangerous goods mishandling. There is still room though, for boosting safety operations at the ports. Continued injuries to workers is another challenge that needs to be addressed.Despite the reported incidents, there may be a few more incidents that may have taken place at the ports, however there is a generally good safety record at both Walvis Bay and Luderitz
