Thump, thump, thump. Bod bumped down the stairs and got a whole new name, and a whole new life. Names are definitely one of the key parts of connecting with a character in a book. Names can help you visualize the character’s personality and physical features. In The Graveyard Book the main character’s name is Nobody Owens. The author chose not to reveal Bod’s real name because it is a part of the life the orphan would have if he never came to the graveyard. The boy was named, not by his biological parents, but by his adopted ghost parents. Also, the readers of the book have never recognized Bod as anyone but Bod. To include his original name in the middle of the book would throw off the readers and be completely irrelevant to the plot
