Nail Caps Essay

There are several options available to cat owners who wish to stop damaging or injurious scratching behaviours. These include behaviour modification, nail caps, frequent nail trims, tendonectomy and declawing (onychectomy). Non-surgical options include behavioral modification, frequent nail trims, nail caps and feline pheromone sprays. Nail trimming and nail caps do not modify the cat’s behaviour, but it can reduce the damage done from scratching behaviour. Nail caps may need to be replaced every four to six weeks and may require the help from veterinary staff to place the caps. Sedation may be required to place the nail caps. Feline pheromone sprays vary in their effectiveness, as they only reduce stress and anxiety. Tendonectomy is a procedure where the tendons in the cat’s foot are cut, so the cat is unable to extend its claws. The procedure cuts the tendons between the second and third phalanges. This procedure does not remove the claws, therefore the claws require frequent trimming as the cat cannot condition and maintain the claws themselves and they may grow into the pad. With tendonectomy procedures, the claws grow longer and thicker. There are fewer complications and less postoperative pain in tendonectomies than in declaws. Complications from …show more content…
The phalanx and claw are extended with the nail trimmers. Pressure is applied to the nail trimmers, cutting over the joint. The contour of the joint is followed with the trimmers, crushing and cutting the extensor tendon, the ligaments and the deep digital flexor tendon. The nail trimmers are completely shut to complete the amputation. The incision is then inspected for remaining fragments of the phalanx, which are removed. The incision is left open or can be closed with suture. Pressure bandages are applied to each foot and left on overnight. The cat is monitored for several hours after the bandages are

Ever been bullfrog hunting? Whether I hand catch, gig, shoot, or fish for bullfrogs, I am going to need something to put them in. I try to hand catch as many as possible and then gig the rest, not killing them at the time. It is usually late at night or very early in the morning when I get done, and I usually do not feel like cleaning them right then. It is much easier to clean them the next morning when it is daylight.…

The surgery is practiced in order to stop scratching behavior like destroying furniture. However, a majority of those adopted cats that go through this procedure end up being readmitted to the shelters due to other behavioral problems that arise after surgery. These issues arise as a result of a combination of long-term and short-term pain that occurs once they are declawed. It is not necessary to resort to onychectomy as there are other solutions that cat owners or future cat owners can use instead. For these reasons, cat declawing should be illegal as this cruel practice does not benefit cats.…

The price at this clinic was very gracious. With most veterinarians being in the practice for the pure monetary gain this veterinarian had an entirely different approach to the matter. After being told that my poor animal needed a major surgery, and the price was very costly, the veterinarian could see a look of worry in my eyes, running her clinic by the motto “a healthy animal breeds a healthy community,” she promptly asked me what is the most I could afford and that we can work out some deal. With the price ending at a mere one-third ($751.00) of what another veterinary clinic would charge, I was more than happy to accept that.…

Usually in 7-10 days the incision is healed enough and strong enough to withstand day to day stretching and tension. An incision heals from side to side, not from end to end. This means that a four inch incision will heal in about the same time as a one inch incision, it will not take 4 times as long to heal. Too much activity : Although sutures and staples are strong, if an animal moves in a way that puts tension on them, the tissues will take longer to heal, and the sutures may even come out. Patients should be kept quiet and calm and not allowed to run or jump until the incision is healed.…

The Everlasting Estrus “Sterilize”, “fix”, or “spay” are all synonyms to the seldom-heard term, ovariohysterectomy. As the name suggests, during surgery, the ovaries, along with the uterus, are carefully detached from the body wall (Flnk, 2014). This common procedure is performed on patients to aid in overpopulation as well as reduce the risk of uterine or mammary cancer (Why you should spay, 2014). Likewise, it is implemented in some instances to regulate behavioral issues, naturally seen throughout the estrous cycle. However, occasionally, the misconduct persists post-operation, which characterizes a disorder known as Ovarian Remnant Syndrome.…
