Although there were sometimes when the Laibon had drank too much alcohol and became outraged, Fratkin really liked the people who he was staying with and enjoyed their…
Arkady Kirsanov has just graduated from the University of Petersburg and returns with a friend, Bazarov, to his father's modest estate in an outlying province of Russia. The father gladly receives the two young men at his estate, called Marino, but Nikolai's brother, Pavel, soon becomes upset by the strange new philosophy called "nihilism" which the young men advocate. Nikolai feels awkward with his son at home, partially because Arkady's views have dated his own beliefs, and partially because he has taken a servant, Fenichka, into his house to live with him and has already had a son by her. The two young men remain at Marino for a short time, then decide to visit a relative of Arkady's in a neighboring province. There they observe the local…
Ivan Ilyich lived a life filled with disingenuous relationships, self- interest, and “materialism.” Every decision that he made revolved around the attitude and opinions of his peers. Take his marriage for example; when considering whether or not to marry his wife, he chose to wed her, because “his social circle approved of the match...and…
The social ritual of carnival takes place in a liminal space. Liminality is a space between boundaries. It is a constantly undefined space that allows for any social interaction that takes place within these spaces to be without the restrictions of defined societal restrictions. The majority of the complex discourses the characters have occur within these undefined spaces. For instance, in Crime and Punishment, discourse demonstrates key liminal spaces such as the stairs, bridges, and even hotels.…

The oral presentations that were presented in class prior to reading Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich allowed me to gain a greater contextual understanding of the novel. The context given by these presentations gave me insight into the accuracy of the emotions and mindset of the main character and understanding of the horrific conditions endured in the novel. An example of this is the context I gained from the presentation on the author, allowing me to recognize that the main character is heavily influenced by Solzhenitsyn’s own experiences. Another example is the new knowledge I collected about the conditions in a gulag which drove me to a better understanding of the actions of characters. These presentations…
The hero, main character, and title character of The Very stupid person, Myshkin is a (child, grandchild, etc.) of an old noble line and a distant relative of Madame Yepanchin. He is a fair-haired, blue-eyed epileptic in his late twenties who comes to Russia after four years in a mental hospital in Switzerland. From the beginning, Myshkin appears to be an outsider in Russian (community of people/all good people in the world): he dresses like a foreigner and acts as if unaware of the (related to social pressure, how people act toward each other, etc.) normal behaviors of the Russian (rich and powerful group of people). In fact, he is different from the other Russian rulers/rich and powerful people in (more than two, but not a lot of)…
Although he is in a state of poverty and misfortune, he still offers to help out a friend by cutting his already meager paycheck in half. On the other hand, Raskolnikov has quite the poisonous behavior. He acts in a snarky manner towards everyone. “He threw angry glances at the young man, but covertly, impatiently awaiting his opportunity when this annoying tramp would be gone. It was clear.…
I have 2 cats and as a special treat I sometimes give them wet food instead of dry food. Instead of buying the brand I usually buy (Fancy Feast) I bought a different brand of wet (meow mix) because that is the brand of dry food I buy. I will not be buying that brand of wet food again because one of my cats got sick and the other one would not even touch it. On a graph my demand for Fancy Feast would shift to the right and my demand for Meow mix would shift to the left.…
“But hardly had he succeeded in regaining a straight face than he glanced again, as if involuntarily, at Razumikhin, and broke down once more: the smothered laughter burst out all the more uncontrollably for the powerful restraint he had put on it before” (Dostoevsky 210). In an attempt to maintain his facade of an innocent man, Raskolnikov intentionally laughs at Razumikhin as they approach Porfiry’s door. Fearful that Porfiry will deceive him, Raskolnikov presents himself as a carefree man to dissolve any of Porfiry’s impressions. The calculated “involuntary” glances he shares with Razumikhin reveal the extent to which he can play the role of an innocent man (Dostoevsky 210).…
Maybe sports, maybe politics, whatever a goldfish was interested in chatting about. Anything, the Russian said, not to be alone.” This is the main example of his loneliness. He could have anything he could ever want, he has the key to change the world, and all he would do was use him as a friend.…
I walk into this large dinner party. Everything looks so fancy and beautiful. As I walk in there are others coming in wearing only rich clothes and diamond jewelry. We are all told to take a seat and to sit quiet. I hear this conversation that has nothing to do with the fact that we are all supposed to be here and have a nice dinner.…
Accepting others: A Choice Barbara Jordan once said with “ We, as human beings, must be willing to accept people who are different from ourselves.” Accepting others is very important. For another person’s happiness, as in “Without Title” by Diane Glancy, the needs of the community, reflected in the story “What of this Goldfish, would you wish” by Etgar Keret and for the stepping forward of a nation, shown in “American Flag stands for Tolerance” by Ronald J. Allen. “Without Title” a poem by Diane Glancy, shows the effects of people not accepting people who are different. The author paints the picture of a Native American man, living without the important traditions of his people.…
