The heart muscle is called the Myocardium. The Myocardium is the middle and thickest layer of the heart wall. The muscle functions by providing a type of “scaffolding” for the heart chambers and when contracting it pumps blood out of the heart and then relaxes as the heart refills with returning blood. The Myocardium’s smooth outer membrane is called the epicardium and its inner lining is called the endocardium.
