Causative Agent: Mycobacterium tuberculosis Disease: Tuberculosis (TB) Classification of the causative agent:
Mycobacterium tuberculosis is an Acid-fast Gram-positive bacteria
History:
M. tuberculosis is the leading cause of death with people that are infected with HIV. TB kills a 5000 people on a daily basis.
Virulence factors of the causative agent:
Mycobacterium tuberculosis enters the body then continues to the lungs. The bacteria while in the alveolar of the lungs can grow in large numbers then infect and grow pneumocytes. Pneumocytes could be either type I, thin squamous cells or type II, larger cuboidal cells both stopping the exchange of air by forming a barrier. In the early stages of infection …show more content…
tuberculosis is transmitted to one individual to another individual in airborne particles. The bacteria is called droplet nuclei when it is airborne. Coughing, Sneezing, Laughing, Singing, and even Spitting can cause the bacteria to enter the surrounding air. The environment can contain these tiny particles for hours depending of what type of environment it is. Different factors like air circulation, air pressure, and if the area is enclosed or not can increase the chances of the bacteria being transmitted. This bacteria is not transmitted through direct contact, like touching a hard surface.
Incubation Period of the Disease:
The incubation period of TB is 2-8 weeks. A person that is exposed to the bacteria M. tuberculosis is not able to transmit the disease immediately. Tuberculosis can only be spread if it is active in the individuals system. Some individuals develop TB within weeks while others may take years. The individual usually becomes infected when the immune system is compromised by something else. When the bacteria is in the individuals system but they do not have the disease and cannot spread the infection it is called Latent
Tuberculosis Infection. This disease is mostly considered a chronic disease that has acute
