My first memory of reading and writing dates back to my kindergarten days when I could sit there in class and listen to my kindergarten teacher read to use. The teacher read slowly and showed us picture so as make sure that we understood what she was reading to us. She read to us for a number of times and now our turn to practice reading and writing came. I started learning how to write letters, words and finally composing sentences. Spelling was not my thing as I always struggled to get the spellings right. My kindergarten teacher was always there trying to help me with the spellings. But I guess I was a bit of a problem to her. My high school's reading and writing skills evolution are the most vivid in my memory. I evolved into a better writer by reading the assigned literature books. My biggest revelation came when reading Nathaniel Hawthorne’s book; The Scarlett Letter. I enjoyed reading this book so much that I just wanted to read it again and again. The book is about Puritans; a religious group that had dominated the late seventeenth century in the English settlement of Massachusetts. The name puritan had come from the group’s intentions to purify or make the Church of England pure by religious and government practices that more closely conform to the word of God. I am now aware of the grammar and sentence structure rules that had had given me such a headache in my early school days. It all started with reading Hawthorne’s The Scarlett Letter which fascinated me a lot to the extent that I was motivated to read and write more. I sometimes look back and wonder what made writing so hard back in my elementary, middle and part of high school. But then I acknowledge that there were some factors that made reading and writing such a difficult task. There are some complicated grammar rules that always troubled me. I was unable to easily comprehend such complex rules. Spelling was not also my comfort zone and I found it hard to write the big words longer words correctly. This made it difficult for me to compose good sentence structures. This frustrated me. Of course, I made progress in my elementary and middle school but I always felt that the progress was not
