Sure, my mom had shown some questioning character traits the past few years, but I never thought it would get this far. My mom had been acting strange for a few years but she had never accused me of an act that would make me question everything I ever thought of when I thought of my relationship with my dad. From the moment my mom accused me of sleeping with my dad, my world changed upside down. The second those judgemental and accusatory words came out of my mom’s mouth and bounced off the walls to my ears, I completely fell apart and felt all the oxygen leave my lungs.…

When I was growing up and my brother attended high school, I always enjoyed going to Friday night football games and watching the best part of the game: the halftime show. While I sat in the stands, my brother would be marching sets, creating intricate formations and blasting his trumpet at fortissimo. I dreamed to be a part of the sets of formations and play difficult music at rapid tempos. Once I entered middle school, I immediately signed up for band and assigned to play the oboe, a woodwind instrument in the double reed family and, arguably, one of the most difficult instruments to master. I didn’t know then, but I later found out that this activity would push me out of my comfort zone and learn not only challenging sonatas and melodies, but also life skills I would need to achieve my goals.…

My parents married shortly after the pregnancy was discovered, and lived in the rough ghetto of Providence with twin babies for about a year. My mother decided to join the Army to escape the environment we were in and to hopefully give us a better life, as neither of my parents had gone to college or had steady jobs. My father had a background in New York City and understood very well that a good education and environment was important to success and avoiding a life of crime.…

Having a twin brother and having slight resemblance to him was the major source of my self-consciousness and agony throughout elementary and middle school. I was unaware that I would change my mannerisms and activities that I loved so I emulate his life. My twin refused to watch star wars or even play with legos, so I blocked off all my love and excitement from those activities so we would follow the same paths. I secretly wished that we looked more like identical twins than fraternal. I hated how he was much taller than me and that he did not need to wear glasses.…
