My Self-Assessment

Decent Essays
In reviewing my Self-assessment from week one, I am now fully aware of what my true strengths and weaknesses are. For this discussion, I will list three smart goals geared toward improving my weaknesses that will help me move forward in my scholarly writing. The only barrier that will hinder me from accomplishing my goals is myself and the need for me to improve upon my time management skills. To complete my goals, I would have to remind myself of the importance of being able to write in a scholarly fashion, remain committed and incorporate strategies to allot more time. Three smart goals are as followed:
My SMART Goals
Goal 1: To improve my grammar, I will analyze my work like Grammarly would and actively learn from my mistakes and generate

In the quote from Writing Without Teachers, Peter Elbow talks about his ideas on the process of writing. He says, “think of writing as an organic, developmental process in which you start writing at the very beginning – before you know your meaning at all – and encourage your words gradually to change and evolve” (Elbow). Elbow believes that you can’t know what you are going to discuss or to comment on until you are done writing and all of your thoughts finally come together to make sense. He also goes against the idea that writing is only a two-step process, saying that this is the wrong method to go about writing and is a backwards way of thinking. I agree with Elbow’s ideas because this is how I think about the writing process, and is how I write most of the time.…

Throughout this semester, we have written two major papers that really display my capabilities as a writer. By evaluating these two pieces with the learning outcomes established at the beginning of this semester, outcomes 1, 2, and 3 are most applicable when gauging my progress in this course. Learning outcome 1 is, "Demonstrate academic research and writing skills in essays and projects to participate in a scholarly conversation" Learning outcome 2 is, "Demonstrate critical reading through a knowledge of the forms and functions of a variety of texts" Learning Outcome 3 is, "Follow a research writing process that includes developing a topic, locating and evaluating sources (including peer-reviewed), composing in response to those sources, and revising and reflecting on that process;" Each of these outcomes I believe I have met by using them as goals when writing in and out of class. In my essay "Survivors and their Children: Examining the Holocaust's Multigenerational Effects" I discuss the impact the Holocaust has on those who survived it and on their children.…

“Revise, revise, revise!” The echoes of my high school English teacher’s wise words still reverberate within my head whenever I am writing a paper, be it a think sheet, essay, or report. Over the years, I have fine tuned my writing process and strived to make it as efficient as possible, but as with all matters, there is always improvements to be made. The field trip to the Harry Ransom Center (HRC) was illuminating in the sense that I got to see firsthand how professional writers and great thinkers did their writing process. While there were several similarities between their writing process and mine, I also gathered some new insight into how the writing process works and gathered ideas for myself that I had not thought of doing before.…

This semester has passed by in what feels like no time at all. I barely even blinked, and the year is already half over. In literature class, this feels especially true, as we have moved from The Things They Carried to Jane Eyre, and now to The Awakening. During this time frame, we have written multiple pieces, the majority of which consisted of FRQs. I believe that my greatest piece of writing this semester was the FRQ based off of a section of Ann Petry’s…

Over the course of this semester in my English 1320 class I have seen a drastic change throughout my writing style. Although I still have difficulties with a few writing tasks, I believe that I have improved significantly throughout this course. I have found that with my professor’s guidance along with my own personal editing that my grades have increased. Although it is difficult to not get caught up in simply striving for a letter grade or attaining a 4.0 grade point average, I would like to believe that my main goal was different. Of course I would love to achieve those goals as well, but overall my primary goal throughout this class was to become more relaxed and comfortable in my writings, to use new strategies and proper kinds of conventions, and to truly find a way to express my passion on these papers.…

As you can see, this is not the first time I have experienced Keirsey as a tool for personal assessment. The interesting thing is that both recorded times I have taken this particular evaluation I ended up with the exact same conclusion of being a “Guardian”, even 5 years apart. In my life I have done many personality type analyses as part of my personal practice to be self aware of my communication proficiency. This began in my early 20’s when I was in a very lost and troubled time and sought out guidance towards a career. The counselor I worked with had me complete a battery of tests and questionnaires to help point me in the right direction according to what my personality dictated.…

The field of music education requires many skills outside of teaching techniques and understanding of fundamentals of music. As a music educator, it is imperative that I am able to communicate professionally with my school faculty, parents and other professionals that will play a role in the learning process for my students. Professional communication through writing is a skill that I must continue to work on so that I may be adequately prepared to facilitate the learning process for my future students. As an educator, it is also important that I demonstrate proper writing so that my students may also develop strong communication.…

I was not an excellent writer at the beginning of the school year, but I can gladly say now that I have inherited more writing skills that I will benefit from in the future. One of those skills is being able to reflect on every angle on my topic to allow me to organize my ideas accurately. This skill is beneficial to learn, for it helped with my report essay to acquire the focus of my paper more clearly. Moreover, this skill helped me write papers in my other classes more easily and efficiently. Likewise, my voice can be read strongly throughout the personal narrative essay, because the passion I had for my topic was an emotional one.…

In my portfolio, I am including three of the projects we have done in class. The three projects we have done in class are “What is a Family?” , “Immigration Reform”, and “Negative effects of Technology”. In the “Family” project, I talked about what makes family and the affects of gay marriages and interracial adoptees. As for the “Immigration Reform”, I talked about why we should embrace the Immigration reform because it will help create a pathway for success for immigrants.…

This semester, I did my research on the movement, Black Lives Matter. Researching one topic for a semester may be perceived as an rigorous idea, but it helps in ameliorating your writing skills and challenging your writing competence. Throughout each major paper I have written this semester, there is an apparent growth within my writing abilities. While becoming a more advanced writer and practicing new ways of composing essays, I gained more knowledge that benefited me in writing my major papers and writing exercises. During this term, I have found that my writing capabilities have improved tremendously, but I would still like to make major adjustments to the skills I have molded and find new ways to incorporate them into my future papers as I move into the next phase of English Composition.…

A short-term goal for me is to become a better academic writer. Writing a paper that flows eloquently will be essential in my near future. This skill is put to use in school for essays and for scholarships. Some of the aspects of my writing that I need to work on is expanding my vocabulary and having less choppy sentences. To achieve this goal I would write and review my essays daily.…

Considering I have been a university student on and off for the last decade, I believe I have become complacent about my academic literacy skills. I earn good grades, in my opinion, and I often receive positive feedback on my academic writing style and my referencing. Whilst I have received some criticisms, it has never occurred to me to analyse my academic literacy skills and make a point of identifying my weaknesses and improving upon them. As my degree progresses, I increasingly need to be able to express myself confidently and clearly and I cannot do that sufficiently until I have refined my writing skills (Grellier & Goerke, 2014, p. 159). Using online proofreading tools was a useful way for me to identify the deficits in my writing style…
