Over the past several years we have been an institution directly involved in school improvement. We are still a school of improvement due to the letter grade that we received by the educational outcomes on our benchmark assessments. Due to our institution being a school of improvement, we have had over the past several years two or three different administrators. This has made it difficult to establish any type of consistency in our school leadership style. However, at the beginning of this year we had our vice principal from the previous year become our principal. Thus she assumed the leadership role of our institution this year. I have had the opportunity over the past two or three years to be on several school improvement teams and this year our school improvement team is called the school transformation team. I have been an athletic director and in several leadership rolls here at our school from time to time. I would have to say that during my leadership I would also and still do strive to gain others input on decisions facing our institution and its daily functions. For example, I am working with the coaches to design a fundraising method or system to where all programs at our school would benefit. I have asked several teachers, coaches, and our school administration to give input and be involved in the decisions that need to be made to develop such a system. As the leader of one of our community transformation teams, I always strive to gain input from my colleagues when faced with decisions about implementing action steps to provide our students with the best possible environment for success. Sure it would be easier and take less time to just tell my team what I want them to do and then make sure they do it, but this will not instill the best results due to the overall dictator style of leadership …show more content…
After having the opportunity to review such styles, I have come to the conclusion that my leadership style involves a lot of input from others to make important decisions. I don’t like to be the one to make decisions based off of what I think is right and how I think it should be done without seeking first input from all stakeholders that would be directly affected by said decisions. As an educator over the past thirteen years I have always found the importance of seeking and collaborating with others input about decisions and inner functioning’s of the educational institution where I work. I learned from this article that the necessity of using all four of the leadership styles is necessary at times throughout ones career as an administrator. In this article under qualities of productive work environments it state that “Supportive, participative, and achievement oriented leadership are the critical elements of a productive work environment. Directive leadership is also necessary on occasion. Leaders must be able to determine which type of leadership is needed in a given situation and to exhibit the behaviors associated with that type”.
