Environmental project: I established a special reception point in the hall of my school for used batteries. I launched an information campaign to promote waste sorting and recycling. I designed, printed, and hung in a school hall a placard telling about the dangers unsorted waste can pose to the environment. I also handed out the leaflets with the same information to the students and staff of school 155.

I started a charity project to collect stationery for the disabled children of Tsiurupinsk orphanage. Together with the students of my school, we collected brushes, canvas, paints, pens, pencils and sketchbooks for orphans'

I’ve always expressed myself through my art, whether it was through drawing, painting, or ceramics, and I always challenge myself to try new projects. The summer before sophomore year, I was scrolling through Pinterest for new ideas and stumbled upon pattern templates for friendship bracelets. Excited by this idea, I rushed out to buy supplies, and for the rest of the summer, I always had string in hand. By the end of the summer, I made more than I could ever wear alone and I was struck with an idea - donating my bracelets! I did research and discovered The Children’s Inn at NIH Thoughtful Treasures Program, in which it small gifts are given to children with life-threatening Illnesses staying at the hospital.…

Through student council I have worked closely with my teachers and advisors to better my school by bringing our student body together for events such as pep rallies and competitive games during homecoming week. I have also made great friendships with peers outside of my usual classrooms which has helped shape me into a well rounded person. With National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society, we have bettered our community through projects such as a can food drive and buying Christmas gifts for children in need. National Honor Society has also helped me gain connections with our local Special Olympics where I volunteered this past year and plan to continue volunteering. As a member of Mu Alpha Theta, I helped to donate school supplies to children in need as well as a food drive and buying Christmas gifts for more children.…

My project consisted of attending a worship service different than that my own. I chose to follow a friend to a non-denominational sect of religion at a local church called, Iglesia Cristiana Misericordia in Laredo, Texas. This opportunity was chosen because I had made a promise to my friend to at least attend one service to see the differences between the traditional Roman Catholic services compared to this non-denominational service. At the very beginning I was rather apprehensive because of my original upbringing to Catholicism and the fact that I was attending service I was not familiar with.…

Throughout high school, I have been involved in many activities. I started off with the STEM academy in my high school. In the STEM academy, we held special events that teach people, especially kids, about new experiments and science-related careers. I helped out the STEM academy by explaining people about the experiments, the purpose behind the experiments and cleaned or organized lab equipment. I was a part of the STEM academy for approximately three years in high school and I really enjoyed it because I knew I could make a difference in my community.…

The organization I volunteered for was one I have been a part of since 9th grade and is one that is present at this school, the organization is called Tree Huggers. The group was created by Mrs. Condrey during 2012 with the intentions of starting a recycling program around the school since before the Tree Huggers came into existence the school has not partaken in recycling. Now that the organization is active around the school, the school and its students are more adamant about recycling. The organization generally meets each Thursday after school in Mrs. Condrey’s room and goes around the entire school with recycling bins, black garbage bags, and a big wagon to recycle everything from paper to batteries. The entire process depends upon how much students show up, for example ever since this year began up to twenty kids have been helping out so the process takes about 30 minutes, but I remember times last year where me and my sister would be the only members recycling and as a result it took up to 2 to 3 hours.…

After I have completed my education, I plan on joining the rotary club to help spread my passion for both community and friendship. I want to collaborate with minds from all over the world to make my community a better place. I can do so by hosting an exchange student or by helping students in my community fundraise money for their own youth exchange trip. Hosting an exchange student will let that student make new ideas to take back and spread within their own community. Helping students in my community fund their own trip will let them experience the world in a new perspective and bring home ideas from other cultures.…

The work of the first organization was primarily educational. I was responsible for organizing all public events on campus. As president of the religious group, my responsibilities were to make sure that the needs of each individual in the community were met. Both of these leadership opportunities taught me a great deal. I learned about the value of teamwork, and the importance of delegating responsibility, not just to ease my own burden, but also to help create a sense of commitment, responsibility, and ownership among group members.…

Geography was one of the most eye-opening subjects throughout high school. I genuinely enjoyed learning about humanity and major issues that arose on a day to day basis. The World Issues Group is a student-run club in which individuals tackle daily issues that occur in the world by issuing fundraisers and raising awareness throughout the school.…

For as long as I can remember, I have been an environmental junkie. Maybe I’ve read too many popular young adult novels that feature futuristic dystopian societies where civilization is forced to survive in an environmentally decimated world or listened to too many debates on global warming. Regardless of the cause being real or imagined, we cannot deny that the polar ice caps are melting, weather patterns are shifting, trash is mounting and the earth’s natural resources are being consumed at an alarming rate.…
