My Role In The Latino Community

In the area I live in, there is a mix of many different cultures. I’ve lived in the same area for almost 14 years and I've seen different culture groups grow and others slowly decrease. The language the was usually heard when I first moved in has also changed throughout the years and has had an impact on the type of people I now interact with on the daily basis. With the different cultures growing and moving into the neighborhood I live in I have begun to see a change in the type of local shops, clothing, and food. Even at the local schools, I can see the changes in culture and how schools try to have better interactions with the children. In social situations, there are things I’ve learned from the different culture such as holidays and …show more content…
When it comes to the girl's role in the Hindu or Muslim culture, they must follow the tradition of wearing a hijab. The role they follow in their culture is seen as their social identity that the women go by to fit the norm of their culture. Although this tradition is a contrast to what is expected of the girls in the Latino culture there are some similar roles they have to go by. The girls from each culture follow the old tradition of doing what their mothers do such as going out to grocery shopping or doing the laundry. Although these are not necessarily rules that those in these cultures must follow by there are instances in which either elders or religious leader see these traditions as rules. The rules that people in these cultures have to follow are also known as, the generalized other, which describes the time kids begin to understand their roles within their …show more content…
Hindus and Muslims own many of the shops in the area I live in so going out to buy vegetables or go to get your eyebrows done is an opportunity to have an encounter with different cultures. During these encounters, it is common to hear people from other cultures interact and greet others in their respective language. The frequent encounters encourage people from other culture to want to be able to greet each other in each other’s language. There are other social interactions such as when Muslims have their annual festival at a local park and anyone from different cultures are invited to attend and

Being the co-founder of a club is a challenge that can be overcomed with strong resilience skills and the desire to pursue a clear goal. When my partner and I were thinking about starting something new, we focused on things that we either cared about or enjoyed doing. Since we were both undocumented, I brought up the idea of creating a club that would unite students together regardless of their citizenship status. As a result, we created the Latinos United Club. In my mind I pictured a club that will balance educational and cultural support.…

Culture is constantly changing all around us. Culture adjustment is what drives us to become better. It is what propels us as societies to reach new heights and achieve our full social potential within a group. Although people tend to favor conservatism with regards to cultural traditions, most societies undergo some gradual changes in order to thrive and progress. Without realization, most people live their whole life unaware of the differences in their traditions and practices and often attribute those differences to a natural process while they believe the original action or belief wasn’t modified.…

It changes overtime and is often taken for granted. You don’t really notice any different in cultures until you don’t travel to another country. Cultures makes you change your point of view toward that culture which we call a cultural relativism in sociology. Culture is so strong that it keeps the society together. I was an immigrant to America when I was 12 years old.…

“Communication is Intentional” page 3 I agree with the author “the strongest connection between communication and culture is language.” My first language is Farsi or Persian and I speak two other languages. As soon as people fill I have an accent they would ask me where you come from. There is always this boundary between me and native people. I’m not saying they are rude but they attitude changes as soon as they know where I’m coming from.…

It’s fascinating how people have been able to make so many different definitions for the word culture; a word that was thought to have one singular definition. People of all cultures are unique not just in their methods and ways of life, but also in their definitions of culture. One person can describe culture as something that can bring family and a community together, but another person may define it as the exact opposite; something that tears people apart and in turn will rip apart a community. Neither of them are wrong or right however, because culture is something that is tangible. Culture is something that changes with time instead of against it.…

I come from a rather large community where Latinos seem to dominate my residence; however, even though there seems to be a vast amount of Latinos such as I, it seems that work is not easy to come by. The opportunities I my community are largely different than those one can see in the movies. California is not as grand as what many outsiders seem to believe. As a student and a daughter of a low income family I have seen first hand the struggles that many have to face if they want to survive the harsh economy that I live in. In my family I will be the first to go to college, so I have to set a good example to my three younger siblings.…

Being a Latino in America is difficult because most Latinos are considered immigrants even though that is not true. Latinos have to deal with so many things like discrimination, being looked down at, seen as worthless, or looked at as either teen moms or gangsters by society. All these barriers that Latinos have to deal with prevents them from coming out as an LGBTQ+ member because Latinos fear that they wont be accepted by their family due to culture. Coming out of the closet and being latino is really crucial because Latinos are not always accepted within their cultural grounds. Latino family 's tend to feel strongly about tradition, culture and religion which makes LGBTQ latinos less open to showing their true identity to their families.…

Everyone acts a different way when they feel out of place. One of the most awkward moments is interacting with other non-familiar cultures. Interpersonal communication is affected when dealing with non-familiar cultures in a negative way because communication is very important and speaking to someone who is from a different country, has difference believes, and not to mention speaks a different langue is very difficult. In my opinion this is considered a linear view because when you try to communicate with the person who speaks a different language they receive the message but you don’t get a respond. Some people might think it is a transactional view because they might receive a facial expression but can they really understand what is going…

I strongly agree the statement that pragmatics does not need to be given attention in learning English because its basic concept are universal in language. This is because the hearers assume simply that speakers have honored the conventions of interpretation in constructing their utterance while the speakers must make a twofold assumption. (Finegan, 2014, pg287). In order to understand pragmatics better, first we need to know what is pragmatics.…
