Having flown with numerous airlines, the classic pre-flight instructions for situations involving decreased cabin pressure are burned into my brain. 20,000 feet above the ground, without oxygen, you are powerless. It is essential that in order to help yourself or anyone else, the pursuit for oxygen becomes your immediate goal. In my case, the “oxygen” I hope to attain is a post-secondary education. Every day I feel guilty that I am able to experience moments at a prestigious university like listening to the discussions of world leaders and Nobel laureates, while my family is 2,000 miles away, dedicating their efforts towards building a stable living. Air travel is nowhere near comfortable. A message from Dr. Florence Thomson written in response to an article published in The British Medical Journal in 1953 was, “most passengers are quite unable to rest in comfort in the position allowed, and sleep is quite impossible except in very short snatches” (996). In 2016, nothing changed for the better in this regard; CNN recently published an article about the disruptive passengers in flights and incidents of air rage in airplanes (McKirdy). What did change significantly is what comes before boarding the airplane. It has been 15 years since that horrifying day in September 2001.…

Airplanes protect people from decreased air pressure when flying at a high elevation by using something called cabin pressurization. Cabin pressurization is when a cabin in a plane is filled with pressurized air. This air allows us to breathe when we are at a high elevation. The air is pressurized through the engines, and the air stays in the cabin because it has nowhere to escape. An example would be a aluminum can of soda.…

One theme that has caused Latinos to be viewed as a threat is the idea that undocumented immigrants are criminals. When the term restriction on immigration is discussed, it is about whom we want to include as part of the nation. “The immigration reforms of the 1920s created major restrictions in the flow of immigrants, in the process producing hierarchies of people and nationalities.” (Chavez, pg. 23) Because of this increase in immigrant restrictions, the importance of national boarders arose. Several techniques that were implemented to enforce the boarders were surveillance, Boarder Patrol, and immigrant health examinations.…

My Motivation: What motivates me the most to pursue a college degree is that I will be the first person in my family to receive one. My grandmother is the backbone behind this motivation because she was always making sure that academics came first in my life. There was rarely a day that I would come home and she would not ask me questions about my homework, asking what I learned in school, or even looked over my homework. As I got older, she made sure I was a part of a college prep program called AVID from 6th-12th grade and that definitely made a difference for me. It helped me understand the importance of continuing your education and how beneficial it can be to succeeding in life.…

Education has and always will be up for debate because society feels that every child should have the equal right to an education. Post-secondary school is becoming more than just an option, but part of the equal right to education. Our K-12 education system is no longer sufficient enough to obtain a substantial income. For a single person to acquire economic security, “It would take a minimum wage of $14.17 an hour” which is 2/3 what it costs for a family of four to survive (Berman). A 2011 study from The U.S. Department of Education’s…
