In 2008 I got to observe fully my first election cycle and I have been truly in love with politics ever since. Because of this it pains me to see how bitter and separated the country has become, because at the end of the day we aren’t Republicans or Democrats, Trump or Clinton supporters, Right-wing or Left-wing, we are American. This is an incredibly corny and cliched message but it’s completely true and steps have to taken to bind our wounds of division. First we must hold our media to standards of objectivity. This would help create renewed trust in the media, and by decreasing the amount of skewed and incorrect information people on both sides consume would help decrease the misconceptions and anger both sides harbour for each other. Second intellectual and honest debate and civil discourse must be restored as the standard. Instead of calling your opponent a fascist or a commie, bring up honest and respectful criticism of their ideas and let them explain why they believe it and do not assume things about someone simply because of their political identity. Third and finally we must try to understand each other. People have different opinions and political views for a vast amount of reasons and to understand why they believe these things is essential. Also understanding each other will only bring us closer. Taking these steps
