My Place
The seats are filled, my mic is on, let’s do this! Stepping into the light I open my mouth to let the music flow out. I see it bounce off the walls while I belt out the notes. This is the my favorite place in the world, it has been since I was a little girl. This is the place where I learned that the stage was the place for me. Imagine a little girl who knows nothing about musical theater. Her aunt takes her to see a musical one brisk fall evening. The air is crisp and cool and the little girl clings to her aunt as they push through the crowd to reach the doors. As they approach to their seats the lights go out and it starts. I had no idea what I was going to happen that chilly night. When that girl started to sing I was blown away. There

I felt like I did the moment I first heard the angelic music from that actress’ voice when I was a child. It was my turn to appear on stage as a more important role in The Drowsy Chaperone. I strutted on stage and a strong “I’m Trix, the aviatrix” rang from my mouth. I was overjoyed that it actually sounded good. The sound pounced from my lips and across the entire audience. Nobody expected that such a big sound could come from a tiny girl like me. After the show had finished I knew that this was where I belonged. My cast family helped make the auditorium feel like a part of me. The auditorium is not just a room in a bland old school, it is this burst of color and light that makes life feel complete. The school auditorium may look like an old room to most people, but to me it is the place I go to feel at home. It is the place where I found that I belonged somewhere with music, color, and emotion. The auditorium at Burlington Central High School is my home, my safe place, my life. I do not know how I would have survived four years of agonizing high school without ever stepping into that magical

As the house lights are gradually lowered in the Glenelg Country School auditorium, the audience’s effervescent chattering falls to a hush and all that can be heard is one voice somewhere in the theatre, enchanting the audience. The spectators listen intently as the voice travels throughout the theatre, until suddenly, a single spotlight illuminates a middle-aged man sitting on a worn armchair playing the soundtrack of his favorite musical on his antique turntable. So begins Gelnelg Country School’s performance of “The Drowsy Chaperone”. Written by Bob Martin and Don McKeller and music by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison, the musical follows the story of an antisocial man as he provides hilarious commentary on his favorite musical, “The Drowsy Chaperone” while listening to its soundtrack on a record player in his quaint apartment. As the music plays, the show comes to life and emphasizes its nonsensical elements to satirize popular musical theatre.…

Growing up, I was always a hard worker. At age nine I sold enough newspaper subscriptions to win a bicycle in my hometown of Allegheny, Pennsylvania. It was also at that age, that I was fortunate enough for my family to travel to New York for my career. At age thirteen, I was a chorus girl and later on when I was fifteen, I performed at Pan- American exposition in the “Trip to the Moon” exhibit. At age sixteen, I had an opportunity to perform in Mr. Bluebird along with my mother at the Iroquois theater.…

Upon entering my first day of middle school, I noticed a class on my schedule that I did not sign up for. That class was choir. I was horrified at the thought of publicly exposing myself to the mass of cruel, evil monsters commonly referred to as middle school students. I knew I would face constant, unrelenting ridicule and crass remarks would be hurled at me on a daily basis. Choir students were at the bottom of the food chain.…

As I walked into the Brechemin Auditorium I was immediately mesmerized by the stage. I took my seat and instantly took notice of the crimson curtain and the Grand black piano shining in the spotlight. The auditorium was much smaller than I had expected, but it created an intimacy between the musicians and audience that was necessary for the performances. During Introduction and Variations on ‘Trockne Blumen,’ D.802, I could hear the pages of sheet music turn and the breaths that the flute player would take during her performance. I was completely in awe of how beautiful the flute looked, glistening in its gold color under the spotlight as the flutist would slightly bob around when playing.…

The heat from the stage lights, the watchful gazes of the audience, and the sweat dripping off of our faces as we struggle to remember our lines, these sensations of being on stage are what caused the performing arts to become not only an activity, but also a passion and an unexpected source of personal growth. Through my experiences in drama and music I have been able to discover my own meaning of fulfillment and define who the person behind my appearance truly is. My passion in the performing arts started when I was a young child first learning to play the violin. Picking up the violin at the age of 6, I became stuck on one of the most basic songs for almost a whole year. At that time no one believed that I could play the violin, my teacher thought that I was too hyperactive and even my mom attempted to convince me to quit.…

Darkness consumes the room and spotlights occupy the stage. Huge pitch squeals escape the lips of overly-excited teens and reflect off of the walls of the arena vibrating within the packed crowd. Anticipation and impatience slowly fill the chamber as distant chants grow closer and louder. A silhouette teases the crowd from behind the curtain, and we scream as a familiar song leaks through the speakers. Soon a beautiful, smooth voice breaks through the speakers, overpowering the soft tune behind it.…

What does theatre mean to me? As I review the questions provided for me to include in my goal statement, I feel lucky to express how theatre is unique to me and how I structure my everyday life around the dramatic arts. Anytime I act, I relish in the opportunity to be a leader, to help people, and to accomplish my actions with confidence. I started off with this philosophy at an early age and have not forgotten about it since. In my opinion, acting is not solely about the individual’s performance, but about how an individual actor can use their confidence and passion to impact other actors, enhance a production, and inspire the audience.…
