My Personal Filters Analysis

Improved Essays
My desire is to practice and represent myself as an educator in a manner that represents my core beliefs as Christ would do. However, to accomplish this goal, it is necessary to analyze my filters: biases, assumptions, and prejudices, related to the way I perceive my world view. These filters influence the “color of glasses I am wearing” (Knight, 2006). Evaluation of my hidden biases, assumptions, and prejudices (filters) assists in bringing my filters to the forefront of my consciousness. Without careful analysis and internal assessment the unconscious filters impact my interpretations and communication in my educational role. Taking stock of my filters will help me determine my current state of mind, attitude and emotions to decide the foundational …show more content…
When I do not assess the filters, I may become overconfident in my convictions and see only what I want to see. This behavior affects my role by displaying a narrow-mindedness that blocks my ability to see the greater meaning of education, curriculum, material, and philosophies. So, I fail to investigate deeper to check if the filter is Christ-centered or not. I am called as a disciple of Christ to “meditate on those things that are virtuous, praiseworthy, pure, just and true” (Philippians 4:8). To put the passage from Philippians to the application I must take stock of my personal filters and search for truth. Knowing the importance of doing so will cause me to look deeper into the filters and consider where they stem from and if they represent my end purpose - to allow Christ to shine and use me for good. Thus practicing the concept of leading by example. By holding fast to the filters, I become more rigid. Rigidity and closed-mindedness can lead toward missing the calling of “love thy neighbor (find passage). Hence, showing respect for others beliefs, their biases and philosophies may diminish. For example, during a parent-teacher conference, my filters related to the parent's style of child rearing, or their religious and personal beliefs, can affect the outcome and communication of the meeting. However, knowing myself and recognizing my filters will impact how I treat the parents and the way I communicate with them and their child. In essence, I can have a positive or negative influence based on my actions, communications, and interpretations of the

    Edwin And Phyllis Summary

There are many articles that I have read over the last few weeks, but two in particular really challenged my thinking and philosophy in regards to education. In the article, “Edwin & Phyllis,” Lynn Fendler engages her readers with a meaningful dialogue between an experienced teacher and a prospective educator, debunking some of the more traditional responses that young, perspective teachers might give for wanting to become educators. The truth is that teaching can be anything but glamorous and oftentimes straddles the fine line between causing more harm then the good that it seeks to accomplish in the life of a child. Prospective teachers must not only think about what motivates them in wanting to become educators, but what type of teachers…

Most Christians have at times experienced a “crisis of faith” due to new contrasting ideals that may provoke questions (Carroll, 409). Entering college for the first time is a vulnerable time for anyone who has been brought up all their life to think and believe as they are told. College freshman, Alfred Corn, was experiencing this unfortunate crisis. (Carroll, 409) The knowledge we individually obtain throughout our livelihood constantly evolves and adapts to new information and experiences, unfortunately learning too much at times makes us question our current standing beliefs.…

From kindergarten to the present, I have always wondered about the world around me and always tried to put others needs before myself. My father also thought of me as a caring philosopher because I asked questions like “What is death?”at a young age. My elementary school, Foothill Oak, has shaped some prejudices and arrogance that I did my best to hide and fix through my middle school through high school. In Foothill Oak, I wasn’t challenged much.…

I am a Type A Extrovert, who finds excitement in the busyness of life, and bringing “dreams” to reality. Because of this, it is difficult for me to contemplate the “rhythm” of work, relaxation and rejuvenation as an integral element of life. Like Scazzero suggests, I may be “killing myself” or facing a “crash” because of my neglect to align myself to this godly and welcome patter of life. By reading Shigematsu, Scazzero Cordeiro, and Loehr and Schwartz I discovered my need – and possible obligation – to reconstruct my life so I can live the “rhythm” which Shigematsu says, “every Christian can live” if he or she places God in every part of his or her life. From the advice these authors give – separate and apart from each other – I now am committed to practicing Sabbath rest, reading Scripture, resting and eating well and enjoying time with my spouse as rejuvenation regularly.…

Many people in the world today have decided that a world view does not matter; that everyone can simply believe what they would like to believe, and it would not make a difference. However, this is not true; a man’s worldview determines his every act! (Overman) Hitler for example, believed that Jews, disabled people, and elderly people were worthless; he thought that he could make a perfect world.…

Over my 26 years of service in the Coast Guard I’ve had the opportunity to serve in many capacities: as a subordinate to service leaders, as a rescuer during search and rescue missions, as a law enforcement officer interdicting the smuggling of illegal narcotics or enforcing federal fisheries regulations and now as a lead engineer responsible for directing others in the maintenance and operation of equipment aboard a 225 feet buoy tender. As rewarding as many of these opportunities have been, few compare to the opportunity to serve as Unit Lay Reader; a voluntary position responsible for providing worship opportunities and discipleship training to fellow shipmates while at sea. After serving in this capacity at three different units I have…

The education system today has the whole pedagogical process down to a science. Take a certain percentage of the student’s multiple choice score and then multiply the free response score by a seemingly random string of digits, then consider the weighted average, so and so forth. Then after crunching the numbers out comes the perfect student: One who can write the proper essay, the correct lab report, correctly perform an experiment, correctly, proper, right. But the system rarely stops to consider producing the best person. If the educational system does not consider the student as an individual, then do teachers?…

Individuals and their personalities play a very key role in organizational behavior. In order for an organization to function at the highest level of productivity, managers must focus on empowering individuals in order to strengthen the group rather than enforcing autocratic leadership to force the individuals to serve the needs of the group. Managers themselves also need to know their own strengths and weaknesses based on their personality types as well as common strengths and weakness for personality types present in their employees. For instance, a people with an Introversion-iNuition-Feeling-Perception (INFP) personality type might be best motivated for the purpose of serving the well-being of others; however, these same INFP personality…
