My desire is to practice and represent myself as an educator in a manner that represents my core beliefs as Christ would do. However, to accomplish this goal, it is necessary to analyze my filters: biases, assumptions, and prejudices, related to the way I perceive my world view. These filters influence the “color of glasses I am wearing” (Knight, 2006). Evaluation of my hidden biases, assumptions, and prejudices (filters) assists in bringing my filters to the forefront of my consciousness. Without careful analysis and internal assessment the unconscious filters impact my interpretations and communication in my educational role. When I do not assess the filters, I may become overconfident in my convictions and see only what I want to see. This behavior affects my role by displaying a narrow-mindedness that blocks my ability to see the greater meaning of education, curriculum, material, and philosophies. So, I fail to investigate deeper to check if the filter is Christ-centered or not. I am called as a disciple of Christ to “meditate on those things that are virtuous, praiseworthy, pure, just and true” (Philippians 4:8). To put the passage from Philippians to the application I must take stock of my personal filters and search for truth. Knowing the importance of doing so will cause me to look deeper into the filters and consider where they stem from and if they represent my end purpose - to allow Christ to shine and use me for good. Thus practicing the concept of leading by example. By holding fast to the filters, I become more rigid. Rigidity and closed-mindedness can lead toward missing the calling of “love thy neighbor (find passage). Hence, showing respect for others beliefs, their biases and philosophies may diminish. For example, during a parent-teacher conference, my filters related to the parent's style of child rearing, or their religious and personal beliefs, can affect the outcome and communication of the meeting. However, knowing myself and recognizing my filters will impact how I treat the parents and the way I communicate with them and their child.
