It is a small device that looks like a “T” shape and gets inserted into your cervix at the doctor’s office. The 5 years device has a synthetic progestin hormone with no periods but it caused some bloating and cramps. When the Mirena was placed inside me, I immediately felt good about it, the heavy cramping went away. After having the I.U.D. the symptoms have been accurate. I have bloating and minimal cramping. The Mirena stated that I wouldn 't have any periods right away or it will take up to six months to stop menstruation. I have the been having Mirena for about 6-7 months and my menstrual cycle is still going and is lasting for about 2- 2 ½ weeks. I don’t know how much longer I can continue with my menstrual cycle lasting more than 5 days but if it continues I will have to get it removed. However, with Skyla my sex drive had declined and my emotional state level was very depressing. Now that I have the Mirena, my level of wanting intimacy has increased and mood swings had disappeared. It’s amazing that is not intrusive and pain-free during coitus and it was at no cost to me from my insurance. The downside is that it won’t protect me against S.T.D’s and time to time my uterine will contract causing me to feel some pressure with pins and needles where the I.U.D. is placed.
