The Eiffel Tower Research Paper

It was the last day of our Paris vacation, and my mother, my grandmother and I wanted to go see the Eiffel Tower. We made a strategic plan, figuring out the perfect bus to catch, to arrive there in time to see the sun set behind the Eiffel Tower and then the spectacular lighting up of the tower at dusk.
We got on the bus and headed towards the Eiffel tower. Suddenly the bus stopped and there was an announcement in French that we didn’t understand, and everyone got out of the buss except us. We looked at each other in confusion and my mother sent to talk to the bus driver with the few words in French that she knew.
“Parlez vous Engleza?” she questionly asked the driver.
He shook his head no. She then asked him “We go to the Eiffel tower?”
He shook his head no and replied in his broken English, “You walking” while pointing down the road.
We got off the bus and my mother started wandering around trying to find free Wi-Fi so that we could map our way there, as the tower was hidden from view by buildings. She looked like a crazy person with her phone in the air. Grandma started to panic because she didn’t think she could handle more walking, but my mother kept encouraging her that it was just around the next corner. After 3 days of trying various treatments, while walking to the Eiffel Tower, they suddenly all kicked in and grandma suddenly needed a toilet urgently! Just then we rounded the last corner and saw the big park next to the tower with a public bathroom. As we opened the door, the filth and stink was overwhelming, but grandma had no choice or other options. So we held the door open slightly so she could have some fresh air. In the meantime a line started to form waiting for the bathroom, all the while everyone could hear grandma and her relief from the 3 days back up. I was so embarrassed, I didn’t know where to go or

One bright and sunny day when I was ten, my cousin Tasnim, older brother Rafeed, dad and I were on the New York subway on our way to Ellis Island, which is where the Statue of Liberty stands. The subway was old and rusty and smelled like dead rats. I was really excited to go because I had never been to the Statue of Liberty although the ride on the subway wasn’t really “the ride of my life” so to pass the awful time my dad gave us some gum to chew on. Since my brother and I didn’t know how to blow a bubble my cousin decided to teach us, and I succeeded on my first try, but my brother, well he didn’t do so well. On his last try he blew so hard like the big bad wolf, his gum landed right on my cousin’s face and boy was she furious, I could see it in her eyes, the anger and regret forever trying to teach my brother how to blow a bubble gum.…

Pierre Francastel and Sigfried Giedion were both analytical in their accounts of industrial revolution’s impact on architecture via the usage of mass-produced material such as iron and glass. However, the two accounts indeed took very different stands on their opinion of the machine and the progression of architecture. Bibliothѐque Sainte-Geneviѐve was indisputably one of the most remarkable examples of iron and glass applications during that era, agreed by both Francastel and Giedion. However, in the eyes of Francastel, the usage of iron and glass to construct classical forms were considered more backward, as he felt the architect did not envision a new style; one that maximised the nature of the newly-popularised materials , hence the lack…

My mother would say that my dream to become a doctor all started because she forgot to leave out Ritz Crackers for me. I was 3 years old, my brother 4 and about to start Kindergarten. We lived in Corona, an overcrowded immigrant neighborhood in Northern Queens, and the local school had no space available for my brother. So my mother was sent to Fresh Meadows, a neighborhood 30 minutes away on public bus, to try to find an open seat for my brother. It was easier to handle one toddler over two on public transport and as a single mother, with no money to pay for a sitter, my mother would sometimes leave me alone in the apartment while I slept.…
