The body system that most interests me is the skeletal system. I chose this system because of its unique and fascinating function in daily life. It is also not a very recognized system in comparison with the nervous, cardiovascular, or digestive systems. I have always had a fascination with this system considering all the sports injuries I’ve had and witnessed throughout my life. My orthopedic physician inspired me to have a career in a field that involved the skeletal system.

Comminuted fractures are commonly caused by a high impact trauma or an already existing disease like osteoporosis. A high impact trauma, like a car accident, can cause a crushing force on a bone which results in the bone breaking into many pieces in a single area. On the other hand, a buckle fracture is caused by a high impact force straight from top to bottom of a bone. It can also be caused by a constant impact on a bone over time that causes it to bend or compress under stress and force. Athletes are more likely to have these fractures due to prolonged stress on their bones. Falls, where a limb is used to break the impact, are also a common cause of this type fracture and injury. These injuries can be remedied with casts, splints, or braces that immobilize the limb or joint where the fracture has occurred. More extensive procedures include traction, which is the resetting of the bones, followed by cast or brace immobilization. The more severe cases can include external and internal fixation and open reduction. These procedures require surgery where pins, screws, rods, and plates may be used to reset and place the bones back in the right places. The external surgical equipment will be removed after the bone has begun to heal and then further methods of braces and casts will be used to ensure full healing of the bones. These remedies take time to heal that can range from 4 weeks for a simple greenstick to many months for surgical repairs. After the bone has healed, physical therapy will be next in line to rebuild the muscle mass lost during the time of immobilization and stretching tendons and ligaments to regain full range of
