I start the conversation by saying “Hi Mom” and she replies with “Hey Mijo.” Mijo means “son” in Spanish. That is a perfect example of when we switch up languages. A typical conversation between my mom and I, we usually just talk about how our days went. She began to talk to me about her job. She works at an elementary school, and she takes care of the special needs children. She is also a behavioral teacher. She worked with kids who had a problem staying out of trouble. I asked her “How was your day?” She quickly responded with “It was fine, he (the student) did good today! Then I replied with “That’s great considering you were very tired last night. I noticed this morning.” My mom works eight hours a day at the school, and still has to come home and cook dinner every night. Her days are long, therefore, she is constantly very tired. I said… “My college class was super boring today. Ugh. The professor has a unpleasant attitude.” I was taking an Intro to Theatre course at the college by my school, and the professor giving the class always seemed to be picking on me. “It’s okay Mijo, it’s only for this semester, then you never have to speak to her again” she said. “That’s true I guess. But what if I run into her someday at the supermarket? I can’t just ignore her right? I replied. “Ivan, you know I hate what if’s and hypotheticals.” She continued. “Why does it matter though?” I said. “Because there is no way to predict the future so don’t do it.” She
