My Literary Development

The event that had the most powerful impact on my literary development occurred during the summer of 2016. That is when I decided to start a book club at our local library, it helped improve my social skills, introduced me to different genres of books, and enhanced my writing skills. Going into this, I never realized just how much my life would be changed by such a simple project.

As I stood there, packing up my bag after the meeting, a crisp evening breeze blowing through the open window, I couldn't believe how far I had come. Just six short months ago I was physically sick if I had to speak to more than one person at a time, let alone an entire room of people. Yet here I am, in the small back room of the library, leading a group of twelve

I have always loved reading, however, I always stayed with one style of writing. Even at the recommendations of others, I never really opened myself up to new possibilities. I told myself that I knew what I liked to read and other books would not give me the same satisfaction. The book club, on the other hand, was not just about what I liked and wanted. We were there to come together as a group, in order to accomplish this, we would need the diversity. I remember when I first sat down to read "To Kill A Mockingbird" by Harper Lee, I had a pit of dread, how could I possibly like this book? Everything about it was different, from the way the pages felt to the old book smell. "It's now or never," I thought as I sat back on my couch and opened up the book, the smell of the brownies I had in the oven filling the air. As I got further into the first chapter, I noticed that what had started as something I wasn't looking forward to quickly became very captivating. This book was amazing, I did not want to put it down. I stayed up reading for hours after everyone else had gone to bed. I couldn't believe that I had never even considered other genres, not only did I enjoy this book, it is now my favorite! I was excited to see what other novels I would discover along this journey. My anticipation grew for the next meeting, I could not wait to discuss this book with the

The biggest influence on me as a writer was the introduction to National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo. NaNoWriMo is a worldwide phenomenon based out of California. The basic idea is to give writers a chance to stretch themselves by challenging them to write fifty-thousand words in one month. As November approaches each year, novelists prepare to be antisocial and concentrate their brain power on hammering out a novel. From my first introduction to NaNoWriMo in 2013, I have participated twice and have yet to reach 50k.…

Does rejection or determination push you to go beyond the limits of what one expects of you? Most everyone would say it does, but does this only affect those of us who want to be writers? It definitely does not, nor is it limited to anyone of a particular language. The piece of literature that has had an impact on me is the novel the Great Gatsby. The novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald is centered around the character Jay Gatsby and narrated through the character Nick Carraway. This novel had an influence on me to follow my dreams and get further in my life just like how Gatsby did. Gatsby was a loved character I felt that he was very relatable to the point that I felt that much of the things that he had went through was all the more real to me. The way this story changed me was giving me the motivation to achieve my goals this is because in the novel Gatsby has been always trying to get a better life than what he was born into, his love for Daisy was also a representation of that same desire to move up in…

What vivid moments do you experience when reading, writing, or activities that involved them? Or what frustrated you about reading and writing? My experience with reading and writing start with my teacher from elementary all the way up to my teachers in high School, Ripley, Tennessee school district, and University of Memphis. Reading Memoir John Green, author of The Fault in Our Stars, stated,” Great books help you understand, and they help you feel understood.” Actually, reading books helps me to explore the world. When I was just a little girl, I loved reading fairy tales which brought me to many vicarious thrilling adventures, and when growing up, non-fiction books taught me how to become a good person. Besides that, reading has brought me to many various levels of emotions, such as joy, love, hate, fear, and sorrow. Some stories not only make me feel euphoric with happy endings, but they also make me feel despondent when a character’s deep sorrow touched my heart.…

A major impact to my literacy development occurred when I was only four years old, and reminds me of the quote from Nelson Mandela, “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes into his head. If you talk to a man in his own language, that goes into his heart.” (Mandela). I can relate to this quote because Arabic is my first language, not English, so when someone speaks to me in English the translation has to first take place in my head so that I can make sense of it. However, when they speak to me in Arabic the meaning goes straight to my heart.…
