I developed my interest and passion for dentistry when I received orthodontic treatment. I experienced how dentistry transformed my life in terms of improving my oral health and appearance. I realised dentistry is not a field which merely restores oral health and treat oral diseases, but as a whole improves the quality of a person’s life: dentists create smiles for their patients.
Living in a developing country, national awareness to take care of oral health is still at a moderate level. I believe the way to improve the standard of public oral health care in my country is through tackling health inequalities.
I studied at SMK Seri Bintang Utara in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) and in my SPM examinations in 2013 I scored an A or A+ in every subject, including Biology, Mathematics, and English Language. I observed many dental procedures, including root canal treatment; extraction of wisdom tooth; filling cavity; taking impression for denture to replace lost teeth; and using x-ray for diagnosis. Looking back at this experience I consider a dentist provides more than just oral health care services. He has to manage staff, budgets and equipment in running the clinic business. Good communication skills are essential with colleagues, dental assistants, physicians, and most importantly the patients. I found meeting different people and talking to them an interesting part of being a dentist. Facing new challenges every day is stimulating. I would take satisfaction from helping patients. I realised good hand dexterity is a must to be a dentist as the mouth is really a small place to work on. And perhaps most important, I realised a dentist has to be a life-long learner, taking part in Continuing Professional Development to constantly update myself with new skills and use of technologies in my
