We all have different dreams and plans for our lives. My grandfather didn't know what his future would be or if he would even have one. At one point in the interview he said, “I missed my parents and my brother who perished in the holocaust. I didn't know my future, I was trying to cope in darkness. Under my living circumstances it was very depressing, very hopeless.” Today children dream about being astronauts or ballerinas, when my grandfather was young he was living in the ghetto and he just wanted to live. The fact that we can decide where we want to go in life is incredible. Even though it may not seem so big, it's something we all must be thankful for. We are able to do what makes us happy.
When my grandfather got a little older he came to America. He told me how amazing it was to get here.
“When I arrived to America I was breathing free air and opportunity and I had a job and was able to voice my opinions without anyone coming after me. It was an opportunity I didn't have. I had hope for the future and it was a big change.”
America is a country of freedom. We are able to express ourselves however we want to. Many of us don't realize all the amazing things about our country. We have rights and opportunities here that others don't have. Freedom is something that was taken away from people during the holocaust.
