My Hero's Journey

Improved Essays
Inadvertently I stumbled upon something that I would take for granted as a refuge. A refuge in which I could express myself, my emotions and transfer them into a visual reality. For once I did not acknowledge the presence of the crutches beside me. Hesitant at first then gradually getting more bold with each sweep of the hand, my depressed state faded away as color expanded across the canvas and replaced itself with one of hunger and awe. This was the day art pulled me by the arm me and forced me to expand its importance in my life. The story of this discovery’s journey began incidentally on the the track, a place I considered an addiction - and still do. It is a place where I could indulge in the enjoyment of running, but towards the end of my 8th grade year it became a place of excruciating pain. Running no longer held the same ease it had once had, yet still I craved it, still I yearned for the clear mentality that followed angry breathes and screaming legs, so still I ran. Despite the ever-present throbbing …show more content…
I’ve never been so conflicted in my entire life. I’ve never had such rampant thoughts and so much inner turmoil. It wasn’t until my hand connected a paintbrush to a canvas that I felt relieved from it all. The dam that held hostage so many thoughts and emotions released itself. Flooding out came a symphony almost as melodic as a runner’s exhaled breath, the equivalence of a pumping heart. Lost in the beauty of color and creation I almost drowned relishing it. New incentive filled me, I had discovered an escape and I wasn’t letting go. What I found was something that I’d take with me the rest of my life. In class Mr. Hawkins, my english teacher said something that really stuck out to me: “sometimes when one door closes, another one opens." A door opened for me, I walked through it, and I’ve expanded as an artist because of

Alex Ross’s article in the New Yorker, “Marking art n a time of rage,” begins with a poignant question: “What is the point of making beautiful things, or of cherishing the beauty of the past, when ugliness runs rampant?” Political views aside, in the light of crisis, differing opinions, and fear of the unknown, the arts can continue to unite and inspire. When artists are among turmoil or amid terrible suffering is when the arts can keep them engaged and moving forward in their creativity. French composer, Olivier Messiaen, found himself imprisoned in a World War II Nazi war camp in Poland. While there, he endured hardship and starvation, to say the least.…

Art has a tremendous impact upon everyone’s lives. Whether that art is literary, visual, or of any other medium, art finds its way into the hearts and minds of all humans. Many not only are impacted by art but also have a strong desire to create art. This desire leads to the music, television, and other art forms that permeate cultures around the world. I had the pleasure of interviewing Arvind Ashok on Tuesday, January 19th at Starbucks in Round Rock, Texas for about forty minutes. Throughout our conversation, he struck me as a young man who while seeming terse and systematic in his answers, was authentic in his thirst for learning inside and outside the classroom and his skill as an on point communicator was present throughout the interview. Arvind grew up in a house with books of all types, which he soon learned were fun and took them in from an early age. The discourse around politics and economics fostered his interest early, and he was driven to communicate what he knew with others. This yearning for discussion drove him toward his active participation activities such as debate, DECA entrepreneurship competition, and student council.…

The degenerate artist in prison, for trying to copy others work, had a large repertory of work that he wished he could sell. His works included many different genres. He had an innate talent for producing his works. He would transfigure a blank canvas to a wondrous piece of art. His talents were so good that people began to wonder if he only feigned the works, and the canvas itself would engender the art upon it.…

I plopped down in my cold, hard chair in the far back corner of the art room just as the minute bell chimed, signaling the last class of the week would begin in 60 seconds. Standing in groups scattered near the crooked rows of black tables, my classmates excitedly chattered away about plans for the weekend. Since I was one of the few freshmen in this Introduction to 2-D Art class, I did not join in the conversation. Instead, I stuffed my hands into the pocket of my favorite purple sweatshirt and anxiously waited for the class to commence so I could get it over with and begin my weekend. To pass the idle time, I focused my attention to the front of the room.…

After receiving the holy spirit from preacher Jonathan Shuttlesworth this past Wednesday, I think it’s time I stop drowning myself in desolate grim nights of self doubt. He told the crowd, with every head bowed every eye closed and the holy spirit present in the room, “When something unfortunate happens, people always compliment the devil saying he’s strong and we never seem to remember how much more powerful and mighty God is.” Everyone in the once murmuring room must have guiltily apologized in their heads or said an apologetic silent prayer — it was true. That was my mindset.…

    Pablo Picasso Metaphors

One metaphor that I think has great power to affect our mindset is a quote by Pablo Picasso, “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” This serves as a great reminder for me, as an artist, for why I create art and dedicate my life to it. I find this metaphor to be a powerful and unique way to describe the effects that art has on people. This metaphor exemplifies the artist’s role in the world. It shows how art can positively impact the world and why it is important in our society.…

The Arts are not a Waste We see a wall, whose height impresses on us the idea that it is thoroughly unbreachable; we see an obstacle, who, like the wall before, only serves to hold us back; and we see an impossibility — to which we cry and despair, for who can do what can 't be done? Yet, to an artist of any kind, a wall is but a canvas on which their success will hang, an obstacle is but a challenge through which the artist will persevere, and an impossibility is but an opportunity to do something yet undone by any other. Such is the way of and artist, those magnificent creatures who bring to this world a beauty that could never before be found on it. They, like everyone else, are guilty of using up precious resources from our Great Mother.…

Senior year is said to be one of the greatest years spent in high school for many teenagers. My senior year however, turned out to be one of the darkest and lowest points in my life. Art can overcome depression by redirecting negative energy into expressing one’s struggles in a creative way. Letting go of the past and learning to take care of myself helped me to move forward in life. Creating beautiful art during a difficult period of my life helped me to realize my future potential as an artist.…
