My Hero's Journey

I did not dare let go. As the apathetic wind blew, my grip tightened on the wooden spool in my hand. Wound onto the spool was a white nylon string which had risen several feet above me. The blue, diamond-shaped tissue paper at the end hovered in the sky, but it did not stay for long. The next thing I knew, the delicate kite collapsed down onto the ground after the umpteenth time that afternoon. But this did not discourage me because I knew wind was something not possible for me to control. Picking up the kite, I threw it back up into the air, secretly praying it would linger for just a few moments more than the last. As a family, we flew kites and everything else on our rooftop, our version of a backyard. A series of steps inside my house concluded with a door at the top. Upon turning the solid brass handle, a glint of the gleaming sun always greeted my eyes. Sometimes, we sat and had a meal, made conversations, or simply relaxed. We brought up board games to play and books to read. No one had ever questioned it, but I think we enjoyed being on the roof because of the feeling of liberality.
