Reflection: My First Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience

Improved Essays
My first Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE) was at Walmart Pharmacy, in Quincy, Florida, under the directorship of Dr. Sharonda McNeil, Pharmacy Manager and Dr. Amr Asker, Staff Pharmacist. I did my rotation at this location for a total of three Thursdays I’ve been working in retail for almost three years so I am pretty familiar with how things flow. I just mainly needed to learn the process of filling that Walmart Pharmacy follows.
Walmart Pharmacy is an organization who 's building blocks of success are Affordability and Accessibility. For over 30 years, these are the two things that they have taken pride in. Offering lower prescription costs, counseling patients and offering immunizations are the ways in which this pharmacy

Asker, the Staff Pharmacist. He also explained to me how workflow was followed and how the verification process worked. My role on day 1 consisted mainly consisted of filling prescriptions. The process for filling prescriptions was very time consuming and I honestly was not the biggest fan of it. It consisted of using a handheld device that processes all prescriptions that comes through Connexus, which is the Walmart pharmacy software. You are required to scan a bag and the prescriptions that are associated with that bag will appear on the screen. Next you are to tap on the medication, then go to the shelf and pull that drug. Once you retrieve the drug, you scan it with the handheld device, then scan the printer and a label will print out. If there are multiple medications, this process has to be followed for each …show more content…
McNeil, the pharmacy manager, and I interviewed when the flow of things was slow. She also gave me an in depth explanation about Walmart pharmacy as a whole. My role consisted of filling prescriptions on this day as well. During the down time, I walked through the pharmacy to familiarize myself with the fast-movers and the slow-movers, so I could be more efficient during the busy spells.
On day 3, I started with my normal routine of filling prescriptions, then after some time passed, I mentioned to the pharmacist that I was required to write a paper about my experience and that I needed more material to write about than filling. As a result, I was allowed to help counsel a patient on a medication and that was exciting. I was familiar with that medication so telling the patient about how to take it and the side effects came natural to me.
The Walmart pharmacy staff was very friendly and they were all very approachable whenever I had a question about the location of a medication or about the handheld device. An example of when we worked effectively as a unit was during those busy spells when multiple prescriptions were either dropped off or e-scribed and we collectively got them typed in, filled, verified and bagged. I’m very efficient and fast with filling prescriptions so I believe that I was beneficial to the team in that aspect of the filling

For 4 hours we took a table and placed it by the entrance to let customers know that they were able to receive a shot in the store if they would like one. My primary responsibility was to help the customers fill out the paper work in regards to insurance and any known allergies they may have. At the end of completing the paperwork, I was able to go back and see firsthand how to go in the system to get insurance companies to cover the cost of the shot. Also, while on rotations I was able to make several compounding medications. Although the calculations were done for you, it was good practice to be able to observe and understand the concept of how to actually make the desired drug.…

The store housed approximately 100 SKUs that encompassed various sizes or products. Within the drugstore there was an entire shelf along the aisle, with an approximate size of 6 feet by 20 feet that displayed the various products. It was obvious that some products had ran out of stock, maybe two or three. There were a couple pharmacists and what looked like about four pharmacist assistants. There were not any visible shelf toppers, but I did see coupons, promotional labels, and endcap displays.…

We will be able to sell prescriptions at reduced prices by carefully maintaining a Secured safe environment with security and also buy selling basic well need items that people would pick up at another pharmacy such as feminine hygiene products, diapering products, general over the counter medications, first aid supplies, oral care items, vitamins, and many more products. The Discount Pharmacy will operate from one store that will serve both mail order customers and those who visit in person. We will thrive by employing friendly and knowledgeable personnel, which, along with our great prices, will drive the repeat business that we will rely upon. We only expect that as the price of medication continues to skyrocket, The Discount Pharmacy will appeal more and more to the customer's sense of value and…

I am a registered pharmacy technician and have practised in community pharmacy for almost 6 years in the UK. The services that the pharmacy was providing were like where I had previously worked and all the standard operating procedures were similar. However, during the placement, I could see the pharmacist’s point of view rather than a technician and how the role of the pharmacist is different from that of a pharmacy technician. The pharmacist’s role was more focused on the clinical aspect, rather than just dispensing and ordering medication. I learnt how to recruit patients who are eligible for Medicines Use Review (MUR) and New Medicines Service (NMS).…

As a member of Health Occupations Students of America, I competed in dental terminology in the interest of diversifying my knowledge of the medical field and made it to state-level competition. I also joined a rigorous Pharmacy Technician Certification class and interned at CVS, an experience that taught me to work fast and in an organized fashion, be social with colleagues and customers, and teamwork skills such as assisting a customer or answering phone calls for co-workers. These responsibilities taught me to make use of time and be more social. This environment was amazing to me because I had always wanted to understand how a pharmacy is managed. In the end, I passed the state exam to become a certified Pharmacy…
