The church played a large role in how they were raised and what values were taught in both my grandmother and grandfather 's families. My grandmother was always taught to serve the church and their community that there was always someone she could be helping even if it was just offering food or a place to stay. This value of wanting to help people was transferred over when my grandmother like her mother before her decided to become a nurse. My grandfather had a very similar upbringing as my grandmother since they were both Polish and lived in the same town. He took more of an active part within the church becoming an altar boy for seven years and was very strict in upholding his religious values. He went to school when he was only four years old and he graduated high school at age sixteen. He would not go to college for many years and only has completed some of his undergraduates. He worked odd jobs for the longest time until he joined the army, however, by 1955 he was discharged he blew his eardrum out.
