Many families have their own traditions and communication practices they incorporate into their lives. These may be passed down from generation to generation or started anew by a family. These types of things help to build strong bonds and trust between family members, while also strengthening communication. My family and I have some very special traditions and communication practices, which I think to be very unique and fun. Some of my family traditions involve making homemade Chinese dumplings, special Christmas Eve activities, and telling group stories around the campfire. We also have a very special way we communicate with each other by hand squeezing to say ‘I love you’.

My husband, my kids and I have several special things we do on Christmas Eve each year. First, we make Santa cookies, I let the kids pick which kind. We also make reindeer food which is oats mixed with glitter that we sprinkle on the front lawn. We eat chicken tortilla soup for dinner that I start in the crockpot in the morning. After dinner we pick out a Christmas movie to watch with popcorn. The kids then get to open their new pajamas to wear them that night, they also get to open a present from their grandma. Then it is time to put out the cookies, milk and vegetables for Santa and read a Christmas bedtime story before bed. I feel so lucky to be part of such a great family with such special traditions. Passed down family traditions have a way of making me feel like we are honoring the people who started them. Not only are we continuing to pass the tradition down by sharing it with our loved ones, we are keeping their memory alive, such as with my families tradition of making jiaozi. New traditions are also so important and can be just as fun.
