My Family Stereotypes

Improved Essays
My family consists of my mom, dad, sister and myself. We are just missing the dog named Fido, a ‘57 Chevy and a recipe book of casseroles to become the perfect 1950’s model suburban family. However I believe we are far from the stereotype for a boring vanilla family. This might be just because I am a member of it, but I think we are pretty cool. My sister is ten years younger than I, so we do not have the classic sibling rivalry in competing for attention. We are very close and actually quite similar. We are both very goofy and commit to obscure jokes. She is only seven, yet she has quite a good relationship with irony. My mother is similar in her wackiness. My father is a professor of nutrition and also has a rich sense of humor but is …show more content…
I would describe that our patriotism is the value we hold dearest. This is an essential American identity, which was and will forever be the core binding factor among Americans. Another point of pride for Americans is our wonderful diversity. I would explain to Germans that America has people from many different backgrounds living, working, and going to school together. Americans strive to continue this by launching diversity initiatives and affirmative action to ensure diversity and equal opportunity continues.
Lastly, I would tell them not to believe the sensationalism in the news. From my international travels and speaking with the friends I make in other countries, America appears like a giant shooting range populated by bad-tempered, five-hundred-pound racists. I would carefully explain that this is a false image. We may have more liberal gun laws and body weight issues, but this does not represent the population as a whole. Most people are sensible and are genuinely very kind. In my opinion this is a key point to remember. When I meet my new foreign friends, I first have to break down these stereotypes. I have been a strong ambassador for my country and let them know Americans are exceptionally friendly, if not a little bit loud. Also the news sensationalizes race issues and people reported in mass media do not reflect the majority of the United States

What makes an American, ‘American’? The answer to this question will vary greatly depending on the respondent’s beliefs and cultural background. As the United States continues to grow and evolve in areas such as race, ethnicity and culture, the image of America changes as well. In an article entitled ‘Nation or Notion’ by Patrick J. Buchanan, he argues that Americans need a common identity based upon ancestry and culture to survive as a country. On the other hand, an article entitled ‘What Does It Mean to Be an “American”?’ by Michael Walzer argues that America does not need a common identity.…

Unlikely duos are a common find in fictional media. While it can’t be said that George Milton and Lennie Small, from John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men, were the first, it can be assumed that the conflicts faced between them inspired many modern works. Steinbeck portrays George and Lennie as having a sibling-like relationship. Through this, George realizes that Lennie’s existence is holding him back, and only putting Lennie even further in harm’s way. This leads us to the theme that sometimes, in order to protect the ones you love, you have to do things that will harm them.…

Every morning, with tired eyes we mindlessly place our right hands atop our hearts and recite the national pledge. We wave our flag proudly at Fourth of July festivities, smiling with joy. Every two years we cheer on the United States team as they compete in the Olympics. We show appreciation towards our home country regularly, yet how often do we stop and question what it really means to be an American. It is inarguable that America is a land of unique inhabitants and cultures.…

Each of these sources relates to my research question of, “Are stereotypes in America raging out of control?” The first source helps me relate to my question because the content it contains is about how Muslims are stereotyped. Showing how during the time of the War on Terror that America was on red alert about this particular religion. So for years after this incident they have been constantly stereotyped by Americans and maybe even the world. Now my second source is about the gender stereotypes of women trying to work through the barrier of having a job and raising a family.…

Television’s role in Americans’ lives has grown since its invention. Many people tune in to television for entertainment and information, be it something as trivial as weather forecast or something as big as a terrorist attack. With that being said, it is comprehensible for some people to unknowingly accept the stereotypes about minorities, such as Asian-Americans, that are promoted by television, thus expecting certain behaviors from individuals of these groups. But what effects do stereotypes have on Asian-Americans in the United States?…

Being an American is something that many individuals cherish, but for individuals that have migrated from different countries being an American may be seen as having to dismiss some of your own cultural beliefs and values to fit in. While interviewing a woman from the Philippines I noticed that we are not that different from each other. As women I want to believe that our main focus would be to take care of our families and be successful, but as I interviewed my guest I noticed that we have similar family values, but different cultural values.
