My Experience With Capella's Mental Health Counseling

It was with careful thought and emotional processing that I considered returning to get to school for another graduate level degree. Although I am comfortable with my ability to think critically about concepts and ideas, I always feel the need to develop my writing skills and it is always in process. Therefore, developing my writing skills is what I identify as an aspect of online learning that will be a challenge for me; especially having self-assessed my writing skills as adequate. I specifically wish to focus on grammar, citing my sources and proper APA citation and formatting. In the past, I have worked with writing coaches at learning centers of institutions I attended. The benefit I received was the face-to-face coaching sessions. The …show more content…
I have had a long career history working with middle, high school and college students who are preparing to be successful students and achieve their career goals. One of the unexpected outcomes of this work has been assisting students with their mental and emotional well-being. For example, I took a young teenage female to her first gynecological visit so that she could be assessed for physical trauma after a rape that took place before she attended the program. I also secured a therapist for a student having major anger issues. When I was in the midst of these experiences, I hoped the resources provided to the students and their families could be of adequate assistance. The initial course readings have already helped me better understand the career path I am choosing. According to Mellin, Hunt and Nichols (2011), after a rigorous peer review process in the counseling community, the unifying counseling identity is centered around the development, prevention and wellness of clients and communities. I am already willing to embody this definition and believe the Mental Health Counseling program will introduce me to skills, knowledge and tools to be the best professional I can be in order to assist those I come into contact with. I hope to be able to continue working with high school and college students; conducting group counseling sessions so that they begin to see each other as resources and support; and offering more appropriate and sound tools so that these students can feel empowered in their personal

My perception of a counselor role when I first entered the mental health counseling program at Touro back in 2013 was with a supporter of the mental illness came the awareness of the importance of counseling as a practice of treatment. During my journey, I discovered that counseling may be challenging as it needs to be individual detailed. What works for one individual may or may not work for another. Whereas “finding counseling” has felt like a very lengthy progression already, I know that the development of “understanding counseling” has just begun in my new found career. I strongly believed that mental health counselor in today’s society is here to help individuals with a wide range of mental health issues (e.g., depression, anxiety, eating…

This program will teach me everything I need to know in order to obtain a Licensure in Professional Counseling and also more skills and knowledge to apply to practical mental health settings. I’m aware that I will be required to do an internship as a part of the program’s curriculum which will also help prepare me to enter practical mental health settings, as well as two residencies that will give me an opportunity to interact with other students and staff, gather information to assist me with my program, and also to learn and practice basic skills that pertain to mental health…

Since I was first accepted into the graduate clinical mental health counseling program, I highly anticipated my first experience of actual counseling. I never expected the difficulties I would face upon my first encounter counseling a client. With my client unaware of the reason for being referred to me, asking “what brings you in here today?” turned out to be the wrong question to ask. The more appropriate way initiating a counseling relationship begins with introductions and obtaining background information from the client increasing the trust level between client and the counselor. During the session, I detected my “machine gun questions” meaning I never provided my client adequate time to respond before I asked another question; as a result,…

I chose to use my comprehensive school counseling program notebook as my artifact that I created in Dr. Dixon’s School Counseling Programs because I believe it identifies the information needed to construct a developmentally appropriate academic, career and social/emotional counseling curriculum. The notebook illustrates the workable and useable knowledge, understanding, abilities, attitudes and skills that I have gained through the construction of the resource. This notebook will support my efforts and professional growth in numerous components of standard one. This resource will help me organize an effective and comprehensive school counseling program that aligns with the ASCA model, along with the laws, policies, and regulations…

My choice to go to the School of Professional Counseling graduate program was also inspired through my interactions with therapists I have worked with, and realizing the importance that the profession has in society, to simply make a difference in the lives of other. The skills and knowledge from the program will aid in taking me to my professional goal as a LPCC, and help me use my experiences as a testament and an inspiration to assist those through difficult times. As a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor I would be able to reach a broad array of clients, and add a unique perspective into this field through my own tragedies, much as Viktor Frankl did in his…

The first occupation that I will examine is that of a substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselor. According to O*Net Online, the substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselor’s major role is to provide counseling services to people that experience problems associated with drugs, alcohol, gambling, and a variety of behavioral disturbances. A counselor in this field is expected to perform the following duties: record-keeping, compiling detailed reports, providing counseling services to a diverse population, and collaboration with other professionals for treatment of clients. The minimal education requirement for this position is a master’s degree and the highest is a doctoral degree. I think this career would be a good fit for me, because this work style matches my personality.…

This course has taught me how to be more self-aware about what type of counselor I want to be and focus more on my values and accomplish what is important for me. This course also taught me how to be more flexible. Having a full-time job working 40 or more hours a week plus school; it was hard and still is, but having flexibility when I become a Mental Health Counselor will help me because I must be flexible to meet the client needs so we can establish a client/counselor relationship and maintain that relationship. Through this course, I learned about my professional identity, how to bring my personal values into Mental Health Counseling without losing myself, yet help the client without pushing my values on that person.…

I would like to take this opportunity to express my interest in securing either a School Counselor position or a teaching position in Family Consumer Sciences in Fort Bend ISD for the upcoming school year 2016-2017. I have spent the past 10 years working with high school students in the classroom. During this time I realized that I had a passion for working with students that went beyond the classroom. It is this passion that was the driving force to completing a Master’s degree in School Counseling through Lamar University. Throughout my coursework and my practicum I strived to learn all that I could about the academic, social/emotional and career development that must happen for all grade levels.…

Elizabeth Gilbert, famed author of Eat, Pray, Love, once wrote, “You spend a lot of your life having people tell you to follow your passion… passion is hot, it burns. Every day, you can’t access that… instead, follow your curiosity.” After graduating from Terra Nova High School in 2002 I decided to leave my home in the San Francisco Bay Area and move to Las Vegas to pursue better economic opportunities. For the past 13 years I’ve had the opportunity to closely interact with the diverse population constantly coming in and out of the city through my full time job at the Wynn Resort. It was through these frequent daily interactions that I became interested in human behavior and decided to follow my curiosity by enrolling at College of Southern…

I first became interested in counseling when I was helping a friend with serious drug related problems and family problems seek help and counsel from advisors. Being just sixteen, I didn’t know how to help him efficiently and felt both powerless and helpless at trying to find adequate resources and services to help him deal with his problems. While I did eventually find counseling services and potential help for him, the effects of his psychological problems were so brutal that he committed suicide. This profound experience of losing a close friend to suicide forced me to develop a strong interest into understanding the role, guidance and motivations that leads people to such extremes. At this point, I had already cultivated the desire to…

Ms. Koenig sees a challenge overall in mental health care is care, or more accurately, lack of care, for these students when they become adults. Ideally, our system strives toward having resources available in the schools for these children, as well as resources in general for students. But this care often drops off as children age through the schools and become adults. We need to do a better job as a society. She states, “Mental health is so much more difficult to diagnose and treat than a clear bodily issue where you can clearly see the problem and see the response to treatment (although the brain is for sure part of the body!…

I don’t think that there is any one theory that capture’s the truth. I believe that the truth is different for everyone. It brings to mind the story of the family of four who took a vacation together. Each one was asked to write about the vacation. None of the stories sound the same, some might have believed that they really did not go together, but the reality of it was that each person had the same experience and perceived it differently.…

As an African American woman who has had much academic success in K-12 public schools, the disinterest and adverse belief my K-12 peers had toward education had always been of interest to me. In particular, why doesn’t he like school? Why doesn’t she like our teacher? Why does she think school is boring, hard or a waste of time? My questions then turned into wanting to understand the reasons why some students are separated out of particular classes while I saw the same peers in my high achieving courses.…
