Personal Narrative: My Life In A Backpack

Improved Essays
I woke up this morning startled, and confused. My mom was in my room grabbing all my stuff and shoving it in a brown bag. I asked her what was going on and she said the Nazis were coming and we had to get all of our stuff and go into hiding quickly, but we can’t look suspicious. I immediately got up and got my warmest sweatshirt and thickest jeans on since it was freezing outside. My mom gave me a backpack to put all on my stuff in. A backpack! How am I supposed to fit my whole life in a backpack! She told me to get all my warm clothes and that’s it. I put all my sweatshirts and jeans and coats in the bag. I decided to bring my grandma’s necklace too because whenever I look at it I think of her and how she was one of the most important people in my life. Then, I got both my boots and whatever shoes I had. I got some of the bathroom necessities that every person needs. I was able to shove all of that stuff in the backpack but that was it! We have to be silent everyday, except Sunday, from 9am to 6pm or else the people working in the building will hear and discover us. I made a daily planner of the hourly things that I do. My day starts off from 9-10am either eating a quiet breakfast or just staying in bed to relax. From 10-11am, I play checkers with my brother. Then, 11-12pm I eat lunch, but a very silent lunch with is hard believe it or not! I have found out that making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich isn’t easy if you can’t make a sound. After lunch, from 12-1pm, I play cards with my brother or mother. Then, from 1-2pm I usually take a nap because I have nothing better to do with my time. Once I have awaken, from 2-3pm I use that time to write or color in my diary. Then, from 4-5pm, mother makes me clean up and help her get our belongings together. Finally, from 5-6pm, I am relentless and tired of being quiet so I just wander around (not making a noise of course) and sometimes write more in my

When I was very little, walking up the trail with a pack on my back and the dog at my side, I would reach out and pull leaves from the bushes and trees. I would tear off corners, smooth the edges, and they would be turned into spaceships, flying across a lush alien world. Sometimes the trail, worn down into the ground over time by paws and hooves, would climb its way up onto the crests of ridges and meander across the moist, mossy fringes of muskegs. The rough, black and gnarled spruce branches that grew there were pirate spacecraft, pursued by the sleek birch branches from beyond the muskeg's soggy borders. As imaginary lasers and rockets exploded against the ships' hulls, I would rip off little pieces of bark and let them fall to the forest floor.…

There is a common saying that states, “Which weighs more; 200 pounds of bricks or 200 pounds of feathers?” One might say that they both weigh the same; however, the answer is the feathers because you also have to carry the weight of the great injustice done to those poor birds. When I was asked to list all the things I carry, I started listing the physical items, but after a while, I realized that there emotional items that I carry as well.
