Reflective Essay: My Experiences Between Reading And Writing

As a child I was never into writing or reading. My childhood consisted of playing outdoors, taking care of my younger brothers, and playing video games or riding my bike when I had the chance. You could say I was never the “book worm”, I was more interested in other activities. It wasn 't until I had gotten the fundamental skills through grade school and high school, that I realized how much it helped me now. In high school and through grade school, I didn 't have the best experiences with writing or teachers. I was never really inspired to write, I wrote only when I had to do so. Mindlessly writing things that the teacher would tell us to write. And in return, receiving my papers back full of red marks. Discouraging of course, more than having to write a paper is the dreadfulness of having to “re-write” it. Again and again it always felt like an endless cycle. Writing a paper, turning in a paper, getting it back to correct mistakes, and then turning in what was considered to be “acceptable” for the …show more content…
Now taking this college course, I was extremely worried it would be mundane and a normal writing course just like the ones before. Writing to write. But to my surprise has been very different and insightful in the most positive ways. I have definitely acquired some new writing skills. For example, some of the terms that have stood out for me are Focusing, Pre writing, Reflection, Exploration and of course Revision. These terms stand out because as I have mentioned before, my idea of writing was “do as I say” from the teachers I had before. It was very by the book. With little room for any type of error. Growing up through the years thinking any type of writing should be “perfect”. So now with these new skills and knowledge of writing I feel I can be more expressive, yet maintaining the skills I acquired from before. Knowing I still need to have direction, focus, and revision of what I

The way I move through my own writing process is simple. I always start with research on a specific topic that an instructor gives me. I’m that kind of person that loves to highlight the important details of someone else’s information so I can admire her or his work in my papers. Then after finding the right amount of work to compose my own paper I start out with a title page.…

With each new assignment I started to learn more about writing, and about my writing style. I began to embrace the process that I go through when I write. My attitude towards writing was changing quickly. Murray points out “Every writer goes to the writing desk with a set of assumptions that may make the writing difficult or easy” (86). It’s amazing how much your attitude towards something can effect it, and how the slightest change in that attitude can make a task that was once difficult into something you look forward to…

Through the past semester, I believe my writing has strengthened in skill and individual direction. In a similar manner, as a college freshman learns independence during their first year on campus by living away from home with less guidance, so has my writing skills. Whereas, in high school, our teachers provided us with a uniformed writing prompt with a clear argument or thesis. This semester has provided me with the skill in writing towards a specific audience with a clear position. Through this process, I was rewarded with the opportunity in learning to incorporate my voice in my writing, instead of simply to questions that were posed on a sheet of paper.…

I will begin by sharing my writing process. Generally, I will always write while sitting at my computer, in my office. There will be five or more English Springer Spaniels competing for my attention at times. When this becomes overwhelming I will relocate to the living room, and change over to using my laptop. My thumbs beating on the mouse control cause havoc at times, which is why this is not my favorite place to write.…

I feel that writing is a good subject to be familiar and practicing in frequently, it is a necessary tool to communicate properly. Although, if I were to be truthful I’d have to say that I am not the biggest fan of it due to the fact that it bores me and I have trouble figuring out what to say. So I find it hard to enjoy writing because most of the time I am just struggling to concentrate because I don’t have much more to say about a topic. Recently, since I have not been in school for a while, I have found myself forgetting rules to the English language in my everyday speech so I find it to be useful. This has influenced how I feel about writing because the more I write, the more easily I can remember to use these rules in my daily…

I have always considered my relationship with writing to be very insignificant. Although I enjoy spending time verbally expressing my thoughts and feelings to others, it becomes difficult when these thoughts and feelings are expressed through writing. Throughout my adolescent years, I would often receive feedback for my writing given by the teacher in the form of a grade. Being unable to effectively organize my thoughts and ideas into words and sentences, I would feel reluctant to continue writing confidently whenever I received an undesirable grade.…

There’s been many things in my past that has affected the reader and writer that I am today and I honestly had not fully realized how much of an impact it had until I actually started thinking about it. From elementary school all the way up to high school, everything has played a role in my advances in literacy I use today. My reading and writing play two different roles. Reading is something that I enjoy and am very fast at doing while my writing is not at a high enough standard for what I believe it could be. There are many causes to that.…
