A. Summary of my experience My first experience in the wheelchair was Sunday September the 25th when I made a trip to Wal-Mart in Nacogdoches. I got out of my truck and walked to the back and let the tailgate down. I then retrieved the wheelchair out of the back of the truck and then sit down. There was five people standing four cars up from where I parked. They glared at me and I knew what was going through their minds, as I passed I could hear them talking although I do not know what was said. I entered the store and navigating my wheelchair through the grocery side of the store that was easy as the isles are wide enough for easy navigation, the hardest thing was reaching an item that was higher than my head. 4.) The last recommendation I would make would be the eMotion wheels. One example of why I think I could use these would be for school. When you have a heavy load such as a back pack on the back of your wheelchair, the added weigh makes it extremely difficult to get yourself up any incline.
5.) One remediation I would make would be a strength training program to keep a person arms as strong as possible as this would have been a plus for me. Since I have been in this program I have not been able to do what I would normally do to stay in shape. Being slightly on the weak side definitely worked against me. A home exercise program would be idea for someone in a wheelchair.
E. Remediation Driver Rehabilitation/Adaptation Interventions
1.) R.E.A. L. Inc. Rural Economic Assistance League in Alice Texas offers several options for community mobility. REAL, Inc. has a contract with the Department of Transportation to provide rural public transportation in Jim Wells and Brooks Counties. Several set routes are in place. Some, for example, are to public and private schools, day cares and adult rehab centers.
